What is the difference between buna and viton
While both Viton and Buna seals both serve as great sealing options at moderate temperatures, Viton is far superior to Buna for high temperature applications. Along with temperature, other environmental conditions differentiate these two seals. An exceptionally broad range of chemical resistances make Viton seals a perfect option for most applications involving oils, fuels, and mineral acids, and these seals also boast excellent resistances to oxidation, ozone, UV exposure, weather, fungus, and mold.
While also boasting some chemical resistances, Buna is much less universally resistant than its Viton counterpart suffering degradation from weather and ozone exposure. For most circumstances, however, this is not an issue, and Buna seals also offer the benefit of superior abrasion and tear resistance making them more suitable for more heavy duty industrial applications.
Furthermore, Buna-N has a slight advantage when comparing short term resilience. Finally, FKM has a slight advantage when evaluating differences in permeation resilience.
Both materials are resistant to solvents, common fuels, mineral oils, vegetable oils, greases, aliphatic hydrocarbons, silicone oils, petroleum oils and di-ester lubricants, with FKM having specific resistences to steam, ozone, compression set, broad spectrum chemical resistance, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, non-flammable hydraulic fluids, aging, strong acids, brake fluids, acetone, halogenated hydrocarbons, vacuum and most acids. Buna-N has specific resistence to acids, diluted alkalies, hydraulic fluids, water, ethylene glycol fluids and alcohols.

Viton seals also feature some chemical resistance and are ideal in pumps used for agricultural, pest control, disinfection, mold remediation, and lawn care sprayers because of its resistance to hydrocarbons found in some of the compounds used.
Another reason these types of applications may be more suited to Viton O-rings is because of their ability to stand up to sun exposure and other environmental conditions. So, is Buna better than Viton? Consider forcing a tennis ball into a square box and leaving it there for a few hours. When you remove the tennis ball, it will return to its original round shape, meaning it does not take a compression set.
