Subway Surfers does have quite a lot going for it as a free downloadable app, but that surface style masks a few major flaws. Chief among these flaws is the game's framerate issues. Otherwise, this may be a minor gripe, but framerate issues in an endless runner can seriously detract from gameplay.

Jumpy frames may lead to an unintended and frustrating game-over, or keep you from finishing a daily challenge if you miss a dodge due to a framerate issue. Beyond that, Subway Surfers isn't hugely difficult.

There isn't really a skill curve, so once you get the hang of playing there's no real sense of challenge to keep the game itself engaging. You may want to keep playing to unlock new items, but the gameplay itself isn't really much to write home about. After a while, playing becomes more of an endurance test than anything. After a time, you'll start to recognize the game's patterns, which removes any real sense of skill or urgency.

The game's monotonous soundtrack certainly contributes to the feeling of an endurance test. It consists of a single looping track. This lack of variety in the music is a bit disappointing given the variety present in the game's other aspects. Especially for an endless runner, engaging music is important given that the objective is to stay alive for as long as possible. Unfortunately, you'll probably find yourself muting the music entirely to keep from being driven completely crazy.

This isn't a great alternative, because playing an endless runner without any sort of beat in the background isn't all that fun. There's no denying that Subway Surfer is gorgeous to look at. The game's eye-catching visuals and engaging style set it apart in a crowded field. However, at the end of the day these visuals don't do much to mask the game's main flaws. Subway Surfers is certainly worth a try, especially since it is free, but it might not keep you coming back for more like other titles in the genre.

If you are a fan, you needn't worry: Subway Surfers is still regularly churning out plenty of free content like new levels, characters, and more. Super fun, but I prefer to download the APK instead. There are 2 that really stick out. The first one starts once you get to about k score, but gets more prevalent once you get to about k. The second, and worse of the two comes down to the hit-boxes. This just happened to me right before writing this review. As you race along the subway tracks things start to move faster, and a simple miscalculation can tragically end a great streak. There are ways to beg for a second chance, but you probably aren't going to like them; it either means watching an ad, or spending Keys one form of in-game currency to pick up where you left off.

The more times you stumble in any one attempt, the more keys it'll take to revive yourself. And here the game descends into the predictable micro-transactions. Nothing is really free, and Subway Surfers is predictably laden with ads and micro-transactions. To its credit, you are never required to make a purchase, though it's strongly encouraged if you want to increase your chance of winning. Of course you can also gamble your coins on Token Boxes, another 'loot crate' system with randomized rewards.

Some characters aren't terribly expensive like Lucy who is only 7, , but others might take you a long while Spike, Yutani, or Fresh all rely on luck of the draw through Token Boxes. A character like Boombot can only be unlocked if you do break down and spend money on the game. If you're adamant about getting your in-game rewards without spending a cent, you'll have to keep a close watch on Daily Challenges and Weekly Hunts, which are ways of albeit unpredictably providing rewards for when you pull off specific moves.

You'll also earn coins for downloading some of the games you'll be seeing in Subway Surfers' many advertisements - titles like June's Journey, World War Rising, or Coin Dozer. The game also desperately wants you to connect to your Facebook account, and promises a free character Dino and coin rewards for doing so.

However, there are special add-ons that need to be paid for if gamers wish to utilise them, while a fee is needed to turn off the pop up ads. Players have the option of resetting their gaming score any time that they choose. However, it should be noted that resetting the score will also reset all progress and cause players to lose any coins, characters, keys and unlocked boards that they have earned. Players do not need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to play the game and in fact many players are likely to find that it actually runs more smoothly when their Android device is set to airplane mode.

However, an internet connection is needed to receive updates. Completing missions is an integral part of the game and players who do not want to take part in missions will have to go to save up gaming coins. On the bottom of the missions tab is an option to skip missions and users need to visit the shop and pay the specified number of coins. Updates for the game are regularly released and players should be notified whenever a new update is available to install.
