A "spiritual successor" to the genre defining Left 4 Dead games, Back 4 Blood, is slated for release in October. Developed by the architects of the co-operative zombie shooter genre, Turtle Rock Studios have built a game wished for by fans for the last 10 years. Described as the next-gen zombie shooting experience, Back 4 Blood B4B will force players to work together to survive various levels, and come up with new, collaborative ways to overcome ever-changing challenges.


Utilising a card-deck system to randomise enemies, environmental dangers and perks, B4B promises a different player experience every time a level is replayed. The game follows the archetypal structure of other co-op zombie shooters, such as Left 4 Dead or World War Z. Up to four players set off to fight their way through hordes of zombies, or Ridden, as is their name in the game's lore, and bigger, more dangerous mutations of enemies.

Perhaps the most immediately noticeable change was the addition of melee weapons, allowing players to smack the living crap out of the infected with baseball bats, guitars, hammers and more.


For close-ranged horde clearing, melee weapons were incredibly satisfying. Left 4 Dead 2 also included 5 brand new campaigns focused on the four new main characters, along with another 3 special infected to contend with. Also a testament to the wealth of mods and custom campaigns created by the community. The Versus mode, where two teams of four alternate between controlling the survivors and the Special Infected, also found an extremely devoted competitive audience.


Even the campaigns from the first game complete with playing as the first cast of survivors were all properly adopted into the second game's engine over time, making a total of 14 total official campaigns. L4D2 is absolutely still worth playing today, even if you felt like you got your fill years ago.


Throughout the marketing of both games, the only instances where you'd even see or hear Turtle Rock Studios mentioned came from pre-release coverage from journalism outlets, so if you believed that L4D was a wholly Valve-original property this whole time, we can't blame you. Valve still owns the IP rights to this day, and we've had to endure "Valve can't count to three" jokes for over a decade now.


It just so happens that the two companies had formed an amicable working relationship since thanks to Turtle Rock's contributions on Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source. Once they saw L4D 's prototype, Valve believed in the project so strongly that they bankrolled the development and marketing, and Turtle Rock was fully acquired and re-branded as "Valve South" in early But Valve still had more meaningful contributions to these games than just marketing money and a reputable publisher name.


Valve and their fans expect a certain standard of quality from all of their titles, and that includes writing. L4D and L4D2 are, without hyperbole, some of the funniest video games ever made, and that wouldn't be possible without the direction of Valve's Chet Faliszek and Erik Wolpaw , who just one year prior gave the internet more meme material than they could handle with two more of the funniest video games ever made: Team Fortress 2 and Portal.


Hearing dialogue that puts a smile on your face instead of making you cringe is still a rare accomplishment in video games that's worth celebrating, and proper credit should go where credit is due. Even then, a significant aspect of L4D 's humor comes from the moment-to-moment gameplay, from the animation and sound effects when someone gets tackled out a window by a Charger, to your friends screaming in terror from a horde of zombies overwhelming them.


Anybody can write a good joke, but the talent required to elicit a gut-busting reaction out of an unsuspecting player in a game is arguably even harder to come by. For that, plus almost everything else about the games, Turtle Rock should absolutely be given the lion's share of recognition for L4D 's success. Once Turtle Rock's work on L4D2 was "complete," Valve wasn't expressing much continued interest in the IP, so they granted Turtle Rock the ability to return to being an independent studio.


Development was far from smooth the original publisher THQ filing for bankruptcy certainly didn't help , but the concept was solid, and the feedback from the Alpha and Beta seemed mostly positive. They launched with deluxe editions containing exclusive playable characters, ensuring the player base would always be fragmented. The new publisher 2K Games put restrictions on Turtle Rock's ability to update the game as frequently as they would have liked.


Instead of being taken to the Echo Safe Zone however, the Survivors are taken to a military base at Millhaven with orders to capture and test "Tango Mikes" as the military refers to them. Bill and Zoey are taken away for examination, while Louis and Francis are quarantined into a padded cell. Millhaven's commanding officer, Major Everly, refuses to believe Lt. Mora's report's of the Special Infected, prompting the lieutenant to stage a rebellion in secret.


Bill and Zoey encounter a doctor, who informs them that they are Carriers , people immune to the infection, but are capable of spreading it to others. Meanwhile, Louis and Francis are guarded by two soldiers, with Francis attempting to goad one inside to fight but failing, while the other decides to ask Louis what is going on outside. The two soldiers introduce themselves as Jeff and Annie, and learn how dangerous the Special Infected are.


Mora completes his rebellion and sets off the alarm, unaware that the Infected are attracted to sound, which causes a massive horde to bear down on the facility and overwhelm the unprepared soldiers. After a Wandering Witch passes through the hallway where Jeff and Annie are guarding Louis and Francis, the two decide to release them due to their knowledge on the Special Infected, and lead them into an armory to resupply.


Bill also had the same idea, and find the four inside the armory. They learn from Jeff and Annie that there is a train depot on the other side leading out of the base, and the Survivors decide to use it as their means of getting out. They arrive at a depot after killing a Tank, where Jeff and Annie voluntarily leave the group, unwilling to become infected as they themselves do not know if they are Carriers or not, opting to fight the horde at a choke point despite being informed it is certain death.


The doctor remains with the group, but he struggles to catch up with the train just as a smaller horde arrives to attack, and is left for dead as Bill refuses to compromise the group's safety for someone they barely knew, much to Zoey's anger.


The tracks stop at Rayford , Georgia , a city located not too far away from Atlanta. Their disputes put aside for now, the group begins looking for a sailboat to take them to the Florida Keys , as Bill believes that the Infection will not be able to reach the islands. While searching for a suitable transportation Louis is wounded by multiple Witches and has the yacht burnt down. They soon come upon another yacht filled with supplies and decide to take it with them to the Florida Keys, but soon find out that they need to raise the bridge to get the yacht across.


They find several generators to power the bridge, just as a massive horde with four Tanks appear as the bridge malfunctions halfway. Bill heads down to restart the generator, and believes that he will be able to make it back, before a Tank surprises and mortally wounds him. Zoey, Francis and Louis soon realize Bill hasn't returned and realize he had died protecting them as the bridge finally raises high enough to prevent most of the Infected from reaching them. A week later, the three encounter another group of Survivors who escaped Liberty Mall and are seeking passage across the river with their car.


Either Zoey or Francis informs them they must go across the river to restart the generator, and the group manages to make it across. The new group asks the three if they would like to join them on their trip to New Orleans as the military is still active there, but the three kindly refuse, having been sick of the military. The new Survivors refuel the generator and resume their trip to New Orleans. After finalizing their preparations, Zoey, Francis and Louis take their yacht and set sail to the Florida Keys.


There are four playable human characters in the game. Every Survivor has their own unique appearance, personality, and background, though all Survivors are equal in speed, strength, rate of fire and health, etc.
