For Byrne, that trip was a realization of just how different Marquette was. Walton is amused by the memory. I felt like I could talk to him about anything. NBC Television executives recognized McGuire's gift of gab and signed him as a college basketball analyst the year after he retired. The pairing with Billy Packer turned out to be brilliant, Al's irreverent yet insightful "McGuireisms" a perfect counter to Packer's know-it-all obsession with X's and O's. Play-by-play man Dick Enberg was an ideal mediator and later wrote a critically acclaimed play about McGuire that captured his essential wit and wisdom.

And he realized that we're in the entertainment business. I concur, and I conclude with a personal note: I got to cover Al McGuire's teams as a student reporter for the Marquette Tribune in the early '70s.

It was an exhilarating time, and it most assuredly affected my career choiceimagine making a living at something that was so much fun. Once I moved on to the real world, it didn't take long to realize how lucky I'd beenthere weren't many Al McGuires out there. Not many? Not any. So we took some inspiration from the past and tried to mold that into the future of what we all think Marquette basketball is. It really resonated with the players. Which brings us back to Maymon, and the draw MU's look once again appears to have on recruits.
