How does gathering foot work

Before you start sewing, make sure you hold the thread tails to prevent them from getting caught up underneath. You will need to test your fabric to see how much it gathers and adjust the stitch length or tension to get it correct. See how the longer stitch length on the right produced deeper gathers. Increasing sewing machine tension will also gather more tightly. The one thing about using a gathering foot or ruffler that is different from a traditional gathering is that it is harder to control the finished length of the fabric.

The easy way - Cut the ruffle a bit longer than needed and then trim any excess at the end. The precise way — Cut a test strip of 10 inches then gather it with your foot. Measure the new length. If it is 5 inches you have a gather. Keep adjusting the stitch length and tension until you have the correct ratio. After the fabric has been gathered, apply the wrong side of the fabric to a fusible interfacing. Then use decorative stitching and machine embroidery threads to further embellish and secure the fabric to the interfacing.

Make a gathers on a single fabric piece. Sew two layers of fabric together while making gathers on one of them. Shirr with elastic thread. To attach the gathering foot on your sewing machine, remove the shank and the existing foot and then keep the gathering foot on the machine and screw it up.

Your gathering foot has a raised channel on the underside which makes the gathers. You will be sewing with a straight stitch with this foot ; and the most important thing. Increase the stitch length to 4 and increase the tension — this is what will give you the gathers. Choose the crosswise grain to make gathers.

Make gathers on a fabric with the gathering foot. After you have threaded the sewing machine, insert the thread from the needle through the hole in your gathering foot. Take the fabric to be gathered — it should be at least 1. For a good ruffle take 2 times longer fabric ; for a fuller ruffle take 3 times longer.

Keep the fabric to be gathered right side up on the machine under the presser foot. You may want to experiment with the stitch length and tension to see the type of gathering you want finally on your fabric. Hold the top and bobbin thread to the back and start sewing — Your fabric will start making the gathers. The higher the stitch length, the more gathers. Place the fabric that you want ruffled underneath your foot, and lower the foot down.

Place the fabric that you want to remain unruffled, in the middle slot of your gathering foot, right side facing down. Sew, making sure you hold onto the ungathered fabric as you are sewing and pulling it slightly to the right as you do to keep it from slipping out. The fabric comes out with nice even gathers attached automatically to your non-gathered fabric. Simply trim off any excess gathered fabric from the sides, and you are finished!
