Day 9. Transfer to Cape Town After breakfast, it will be time to check out and make our way back to Johannesburg. Day Relaxing day Today is all about relaxing! Join us as we heed the call of the Kruger and embark on a magical journey into this vast, game-filled national park. Search for lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos and elephants during the day, and then relax in a comfortable lodge at night. This is the perfect way to see the spectacular Kruger National Park without sacrificing creature comforts. This is one of our Short Breaks and is slightly different to our group tours.

There is no group leader but rather a local guide with the idea being that you maintain a level of independence during down time. You'll most likely travel on a join-in basis, which means you may or may not be joined by others for activities and transportation, depending on demand.

The transport to and from Kruger National Park will be in a seater minivan. This is a shuttle service that departs daily. You may be sharing this shuttle ride with other travellers booked on different trips and itineraries to you. Our lodge is located within the Greater Kruger Park ecosystem. As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals.

This trip departs between 5. You will be picked up on day 1 from our preferred Joining Point Hotel; the Holiday Inn Rosebank and pick up time is 6.

If you require pick up from another centrally-located hotel in Johannesburg or OR Tambo Airport Hotel, please inform your booking agent at least 14 days prior to departure. Or, if you are wanting to self-cater and staying in accommodation without a full kitchen and utensils, you will need to organise some necessary utensils and equipment. We stopped at the city of Nelspruit, approx kms from the Crocodile Bridge gate and picked up some very basic supplies to help us self-cater for our two weeks in the park.

A basic picnic set and a cooler bag or cooler box will more than likely do the job if you are only planning a short stay. We found it much cheaper to buy individual items from a low-end department store or supermarket rather than buying a complete picnic set. This is a summary list of the things we found to be useful and inexpensive. One essential gadget for Kruger National Park or any safari for that matter is Binoculars. We found binoculars were incredibly handy for spotting lions in the distance lying in grass, or leopards in trees.

Even watching animals from camp restaurants such as Skukuza, Letaba and Mopani where the river runs past the front of the restaurants. You can easily watch animals coming to drink or hippo playing in the water.

Binoculars will be the one item you reach for many times throughout your Kruger self-drive safari. However, there is a lot of excellent quality, reasonably priced binoculars on the market perfect for travel and any Kruger first-timer. A small pocket size torch is a must if you are staying in Kruger.

You may have to walk to the ablution blocks in the dark and will often be packing the car up in the dark when heading off on early morning game drives. South African Power adapter and a power board from your country. Most of the accommodation in Kruger will have only one power outlet, and often the fridge is plugged into this. We find travelling with a power board from our home country helps when you have various devices to charge overnight.

One that also has USB ports is especially handy. Camera gear is an obvious choice. Depending on what level photographer you are will determine what you need. We shoot with a full-frame DSLR so have quite a bit of kit. You can see our travel photography gear here. There is a range of great cameras for safari photography to suit all budgets and skill level. Regardless of the equipment you use, one thing is sure; you will want to have plenty of storage cards and charging capabilities.

Think about taking extra SD cards for your camera, especially if you are not going to have the ability to download at the end of the day. Us a quality SD card like Scan Disk to avoid any malfunctions and possible loss of photos. Also consider additional charging capabilities, especially for your phone.

An external charger or volt car charger is a must. One of our favourites is the Zus Car Charger We have used this for over a year now and just love it. You can see our full review of the Zus Charger here. People using cameras with bigger lenses or video equipment might like to consider a photography bean bag for the side of the car.

We used one on the Private Kruger Safari and at the lodge safaris and would have loved one in the car while we were self-driving. Grizzly Camera Bean Bag. We use a Nikon mm as a compromise which is perfect for travel. While this worked well for us, a — mm lens would have been optimal for wildlife in Kruger. Lens rental is something we would have done in hindsight. There are many comprehensive guides to self-drive safari in Kruger out there. They offer detailed road maps and guides to identifying different species. These are fabulous guides, and we recommend picking one up before you go. They certainly took the guesswork out of navigating around the park and how to successfully find and spot wildlife. Our guide was dog-eared and falling apart by the time we left the park.

This guide, however, is purely meant to give other first-timers an idea of what to expect and how to prepare for a self-drive safari. This is not intended to be about the experience, just the practicalities.

When planning which rest camps to stay at, consider — The distances between camps. Also, factor the reduced speed limits of 50kms on sealed roads and 40kms on dirt roads. You will also be stopping often for the many wildlife interactions, even on the main roads. This will determine how many days you need or how many camps you decide to stay at.

The biggest questions we had were: Would we be able to buy food for self-catering in the park? Then, head to nearby Sabi Sands Game Reserve , where you'll stay for two nights accommodations are available for every budget.

Adjoining Kruger National Park, this reserve shares the Big Five and other game, and is especially renowned for leopard sightings. Spend two days enjoying early morning and sunset off-road game drives and game walks. Then, follow the route in the day itinerary above, driving north to Olifants for one night, then continuing north to Mopani. Exit the park on day seven via the Phaloborwa gate. Visit the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to learn about their animal rescue and conservation programs.

With 10 days, you can escape the crowds and explore the relatively little-visited northern section of the park. Follow the one-week itinerary detailed above for the first six days.

Then, on day 7, drive north from Mopani to Shingwedzi. Although northern Kruger has far less animal density than the south, Shingwedzi is renowned for its elephants. Follow the Shingwedzi loop drive into the Shingwedzi flood plain system allow 4 hours —a riverine forest with plenty of buffalo and waterbuck lions are often active late in the day, preparing for their night-time hunt.

This area also boasts sensational birding at Kanniedood Dam. Spend the night at Shingwedzi Camp. From Shingwedzi, the only road north is the H On day 8, follow it and detour for game-viewing on the unpaved mile 20 km Mphongolo Loop —one of the best drives in all Kruger. Continue to Pafuri Camp for the night. Spend your last day relaxing on game drives and exploring the area's attractions. On day ten, exit the park via either the Pafuri or Punda Maria gates.

Two weeks provides a chance to explore Kruger National Park end to end, to spend time in one or two private game reserves adjoining the park, and to visit nearby top attractions as well.
