Are the syllable count, pronunciation, words that rhyme, and syllable divisions for sestina correct? There are numerous syllabic anomalies found within the U. English language. Can sestina be pronounced differently? Did we divide the syllables correctly? Which cannot see its likeness in their sorrow That brought them desperate to the brink of valleys; Dreaming of evening walks through learned cities They reined their violent horses on the mountains, Those fields like ships to castaways on islands, Visions of green to them who craved for water.

Auden has chosen six words that are relatively similar: valleys, mountains, water, islands, cities, and sorrow. Each of these words is a noun, and only one is an abstract noun. The others all refer to geographical features. Auden had made the repetition a bit easier on himself by choosing only nouns, and ones that are easily connected. She remembered spinach. KentForrester View Comment :. I could not agree more. My cousin and I used to argue over it years ago when we lived together and both were writing poetry a lot. He thought I was a conformist because I cared about rhythm, meter, etc. Timely post. I used to read and write poetry a lot in the late 90s and early aughts. I told myself I should try to get back into reading it again. The other half of it is that once one learns the disciplines of the art, it is easier to break the rules in a meaningful way.


Even Picasso could paint in a way we could appreciate:. A lot of painters these days have never learned the old ways, all they know is the version without rules.


That is also true of poets. They grew up in a time of no rules. And they write crap.
