Even James Bond, the suave British agent code-named , was recently spotted donning a track top from the cult Manchester label. Well, at least Bond star Daniel Craig was. The Gio Goi label born out of the electronic music scene of the s and relaunched in , is on a roll, dressing a new generation of musicians ranging from rock icon Pete Doherty to hip hop star Mike Skinner from The Streets.
The Donnellys, who are tight-lipped on specific sales figures, claim that Gio Goi now ranks among the top three selling streetwear brands in Britain. The Donnellys have been in fashion for nearly 20 years. The brothers, who come from a family in the scrap metal business -- they joke they were raised in a scrapyard -- hosted some of the first warehouse parties of the rave culture in Manchester and London.
There was no social media back then, so you had to find it or be a part of It. Like-minded people, a connection. I mean, if you have confidence in yourself to know that if you set something up, that you could make a success of it.
It was like just a self-belief… when Christopher did his 21st Birthday party, the NME, The Stone Roses, London Records and anybody who was anybody turned up to share an experience with us. Those rewards came fast. We spent years on the terraces, went away with the lads. Really it was just about making clothes that the lads would wear. The designs pretty much all came from Christopher. Gio-Goi is music.
S, Fiorucci, Pringle, Kickers and Pod. It was the same right around the country, that casual vibe. They were cool guys. For us as a young brand coming through to be embraced by these guys, guys I looked up to. It was a great moment. Cause that was our life. It was just a melting pot and we were right in the thick of it.
So that was definitely a turning point in my head. That was the route we needed to go. We were there at the start of acid house, with a few others. Publications like the NME were coming to Manchester to find out about this thing and what was going on. The bands that they were interviewing would be wearing Gio-Goi in videos, magazines and wherever else when they were touring around the world, so the brand was getting great exposure. The piece autumn 17 collection includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, tracksuits and puffa jackets and will launch in late summer. The brand has 50 multiples and 10 independent retailers lined up for its first season in its new guise. It is opening a new head office at 25 Carnaby Street in London this week and a new website will launch at the end of February, stocking a small collection of limited edition exclusives.
