How many circuits are in a typical house
Mapping your circuits is something you should do in daylight with a helper. To make your mapping easier, remember that receptacles are usually on circuits separate from lighting, and major appliances such as furnaces, microwaves, washing machines, electric dryers, and electric ovens often have dedicated circuits. Note: If your electrical panel has old circuit breakers, flipping them off and on can break them, and obsolete circuit breakers may be difficult to replace.
Flip one on. Repeat with the other large circuit breakers and major appliances. Turn breakers on and off until you find the one that turns on the device.
Leave that breaker on and have your helper plug the device into other receptacles; note all the ones controlled by that breaker. I could build a nice electric TM with that much power! I agree with Jim here unless they are older homes, then there is nothing but 15's everywhere. Thanks guys for sharing this was very very helpful to me.
Im in So Calif in Orange County to be exact. Our oldest homes typically where built in late 50's while most of the homes where built within the last 40 years to newer. I think so Braveheart, The device Jim mentioned doesn't look like it will do what you are looking for. You want to locate separate circuits, not see how many amps are in use on a particular circuit. How many cords are you looking to use? I don't see a problem just "looking" in their breaker box, and seeing where the separate circuits are.
Bob Savage said:. Larry, Are you counting the 20 amp outlets in your house, or are you actually counting 28 separate, 20 amp circuit breakers, in your breaker box? If you have 28 amp circuits in your home, it would have to be over 15, square feet, which is not exactly a "standard" home. You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads J. It wouldn't have been much use to them had they arrived and said there were more circuits than you had expected only to be told that you were not going to proceed then!
If there were indeed 19 circuits then I think the charge was fair. Reaction score 19, As a matter of interest how long was he on site for. We tested a 3 bed property recently with storage heating that had 16 ccts all in.
Reaction score 1, My house has 15 circuits. Adam W. Adam W said:. That seems a lot of circuits - do you really need 3 socket circuits in the kitchen, a circuit for each floor, or a separate circuit for the lounge sockets? You have an emergency light on it's own circuit with one socket? Could the washing machine not have gone on one of the 3 kitchen finals, or with the "mains skt"? I appreciate the need to segregate circuits, but there is such a things as too many, especially when it comes to paying by the circuit to have them tested.
That seems a lot of circuits - do you really need 3 socket circuits in the kitchen,. Dan said:. He probably knows somebody who can get them tested for free. I was thinking something along the same lines - I'm kind of assuming he wired it himself judging by things like the freezer on it's own circuit a good idea the emergency light another good idea, although I'd probably have had it on a lighting circuit and because there are so many circuits.
It would be nice to think that buying a house from an electrician would be a great thing because you know the electrics are the best they can be, not that it would be a bad thing because you need to pay his mate a fortune for an EICR. Yeah but the plumbing could be shocking so swings and roundabouts lol.
You'd hope he would have taken his own advice and got a professional in to do it. There may have been a good reason why there need to be so many circuits, perhaps due to the way the property has been constructed or converted; this is one of the pitfalls of living in a home which has character.
The three circuits for kitchen sockets is OTT I'll admit, but in my defence I only installed one of them, two doubles for general use. Was easier than tapping into existing circuits as the consumer unit is in the basement directly below. Thank you for the discussion you have allayed my fears and I don't think I have been 'had' at all but I am upset by the amount of money.
Looking at the report there are 19 circuits and yes it is a storage heater house as there is no mains gas. The report came back as unsatisfactory with a number of C2 and C3 recommendations. Thanks everyone for your input No another note are modern storage heaters any good or is it worth the investment to get oil on site and go for central heating? No pressure to answer just thought I would ask while I am here.
