I will say, as someone who has played almost every Call of Duty entry for more than half of my life, that Black Ops Cold War is perhaps the tightest and most impressive the game has ever felt. There is, however, quite a bit to complain about.
The multiplayer contains under 30 weapons and none feel particularly interesting or all that different from one another. That gives it the feel of an older, stodgier shooter — much more like the Black Ops games of old.
Surprisingly, it feels like all of the best new ideas and creative energy in Black Ops Cold War went into the zombies mode. And that makes sense: zombies is now more of a signature pillar of the Black Ops brand than any of the campaign characters or storylines.
The mode is fast-paced, fun, and filled with secrets to uncover and puzzles to solve. My main issue with it now is not that any one of these new modes is subpar, but that they all feel like the disjointed limbs of a Frankenstein video game.
Black Ops Cold War is overflowing with content and covers seven distinct console hardware types, a PC version, and a battle royale, all of it taking up more storage space than pretty much any other game in history. This is supposed to be freeing — play the new Call of Duty on any platform with any of your friends and only the game types you enjoy. And to a large extent, the cross-gen and cross-platform functions work well and Activision should be applauded for the sheer complexity of the technical feat it pulled off weaving this all together.
This ranges from scorestreaks and maps to popular modes like Die Hardpoint, giving gamers a reason to stick with the title. New weapons are constantly being added as well, while a smart Seasonal challenge system and the Prestige Shop constantly gives players some new items to grind for. Features that were not present in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , like a mini map and map voting, also return.
Fans of more competitive multiplayer may enjoy the League Play mode, as it gives players proper ranks to grind through. Like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , there is a focus on small and large playlists as well. Gunfight returns for 2v2 and 3v3 fights, while modes like Multi-Team Elimination and Combined Arms offer some massive battles. Several classic maps from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 have also been remastered, giving fans some nostalgia.
With the many bugs that plagued the game at launch being worked out, and new content constantly coming, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is in a much better place than it used to be. In its current form, the game is plenty of fun, and the fact that it is continuing to grow is a major positive. While this is understandably disappointing for fans of the game, it is clear that no new content is coming, with the focus being entirely on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Players have a reason to grind for camos and calling cards, as there is new content on the way to use them in. When starting up the game every week, there is something fresh to enjoy, whether it be an event or a new playlist. The same cannot be said for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare , as the game is done adding content. While this does give players plenty to play, they will not be seeing anything extra added, meaning the game may get boring quickly.
On top of getting continued support, the gameplay feeling more like old school Call of Duty is a big deal for longtime fans, making it a solid choice for those that dislike the slow pace of Modern Warfare
