Why is akron good at soccer

And they remained a national power. After firing Terry Bowden, the Zips are looking for a new football coach. Regardless of who takes the job, the rules of NCAA Division I football with 85 full scholarships and some schools with 90,seat or more stadiums are stacked against the mid-majors such as Akron.

But not in soccer. A Division I team is allowed only 9. Embick said only two to four players per year are likely to be on a full-scholarship. Most have some athletic money combined with academic or perhaps financial aid based on need. Many players also have student loans. Furthermore, some schools such as Akron simply make a greater commitment to soccer. They consistently have been in the top 15 in attendance, averaging close to 2, per game. Because soccer scholarships are so limited, Akron can out-recruit Ohio State for a player, something that never happens in football.

In fact, the Zips are far more respected in the soccer world than the Buckeyes or most other football powers. Akron places more emphasis on the sport. That allows Akron to keep a coach such as Embick. Daniel is going to lead the back line and we can form a good unit quickly here. Having those three defenders back will help solidify the team as Saunders takes over for three-year starter Ben Lundt, who was drafted by FC Cincinnati in January.

That doesn't take away from any of the hard work, fitness and getting back in Akron v shape that we need to be in. With Egbo, a Hermann Trophy Watch nominee, leading a high-powered offense that includes Harter and Ritaccio, the second-ranked Zips come in with three players named to the TopDrawerSoccer.

We're trying to have everyone up to speed and become one team. We have a lot of key guys back up front. We just need the guys that haven't played getting us into it again. Pitt turned things up a notch in the second half. Pitt moves to overall for the season. Sophomore Filip Mirkovic earned an assist, his third of the season and second in as many games. Once again, Pitt now on the season goes on the road and loses to a regional MAC rival by same scoreline.

Akron have scrambled each time to deny chances. An early goal surrendered — again on the road. Zips penetrate deep to the end line — and short cross is headed in Dyson Clapier. That was well executed by Akron but Pitt defending can be better.
