RM1 SS said:. I would spell that louver which Collins says is the American spelling , and pronounce the r. There's nothing 'strange' or 'incorrect' about how we English-speakers pronounce the Louvre in English : we merely pronounce it English-style. Now if we pronounced Paris France as pa-hree , that would be both strange and incorrect, because that's no t how we pronounce it in English.

I've lost count of how many times I've said this in this forum Last edited: May 18, Now if we pronounced Paris France as pa-hree , that would be both strange and incorrect, because that's now how we pronounce it in English. Louvre, in this context, is a proper noun. In general , proper nouns are spelled in the way that the original language spells them or, where the alphabet is different, as an English approximation of the original pronunciation. However, there are exceptions and these have to be learned.

I would not normally insert a French pronunciation of "Louvre" into a sentence in English. When I'm speaking English, I pronounce the architectural feature like "loover', but the museum like "loov".

I agree with ewie, cubaMania and Paul. It does not follow that just because a word comes from French it has to be pronounced in the same way in English. And we might anglicise it differently too. Thanks, anon. Students: We have free audio pronunciation exercises.

It is pronounced loo-vr. The r is a European rolling r. Many people mistakenly say loov , but that is not correct. The e is silent, but the r isn't. Site Hint: Check out our list of pronunciation videos. Answer this Question. Ask a Question. How Is Your Fever?
