Raoul came from a large family, he had eight siblings, and due to a shortage of money, Dufy left the school at the young age of 14, and started working for a coffee importing company.

Raoul adopted the impressionist style with a dedicated passion, and his art began to feature bold and sharp strokes of bright colors marked with broad brushstrokes that associated his style with that of the Fauve artists.

He collaborated with Georges Braque and Emile Othon Friesz who worked in the Cubist style, however, Raoul returned to his own unique and uninhibited Fauvist style. During the s, Raoul became increasingly involved in designing ceramics and tapestries, and to give full reign to his experimentation and creativity, he set up his own cloth printing studio.

He began conducting extensive travels within France, and abroad and during his journeys, he would make any scene that would strike his interests the subject of his canvas, and such subjects include any recreational scene such as concerts, parades, and horse races. Bored by academic painting, he found inspiration in Van Gogh, Gauguin and some Impressionist painters. In , introduced to Berthe Weill, a prominent gallery owner and principal sponsor of the Fauve artists, Raoul Dufy found some success when she bought one of his pastels.

Between and , Weill included the young artist in six group shows at her gallery. The Fauves were known for their use of bright colors and rich bold contours. Paul Poiret took notice of Dufy and commissioned him to design some textile patterns for his new line of garments.

The Poiret dresses worn by elegant women of his time eventually carved him the road to success. This new popularity as an applied artist fostered other work for the Bianchini-Ferrier textile firm from Lyons. After settling on the French Riviera for a break from textile work in , Dufy began painting again; now inspired by Chinese calligraphy. He worked in a variety of media, including oils, watercolour he produced over , gouache, textiles and woodcuts.

His paintings include many scenes of luxury and pleasure, and are characterised by vivid colours, calligraphic brush marks, brightly coloured backgrounds and a sense of joie de vivre. Dufy was born in Le Havre, France, in After taking night classes in Le Havre, he obtained a scholarship to Paris in He produced works with glowing colours and broad sweeping brush strokes aligned which aligned him more closely with the Fauvists such as Henri Matisse — whose paintings greatly impressed Dufy.

While his paintings became more formally structured during this period, Dufy did not go as far towards Cubism, and he continued to use more vivid colours than Braque. Dufy had a number of friends who were writers, including the famous French poet Apollonaire, and he illustrated a number of books with woodcuts. In he began using woodcut in textile design in association with Paul Poiret, the most fashionable dress-designer of pre—First World War Europe.
