Narasimha Rao was not a popular or charismatic political leader. He acquired power by accident and had to share it with various factions within his own party. Yet, he made the best and most use of the institutional power that he secured as Prime Minister to nudge India as an emerging economy and a rising power.

Through the subsequent two decades, and under the leadership of two of his worthy successors — Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh — India recorded higher rates of economic growth, reduced poverty and became a symbol of global hope as a developing country democracy. That legacy has come under threat as the economy falters, social and political divisiveness weaken the polity, and poverty and unemployment are once again on the rise.
