Why is the remington 770 so bad

2022.01.12 23:15

The chamber, mechanically speaking, is pretty sound. It will jam if you try to go too fast or are too jerky with the movements, but again, remember this rifles purpose. It is not to cycle through rounds quickly at multiple targets. Okay, just kidding, but again it gets the job done and that's the point here. The bolt doesn't slide very smoothly out of the box and will absolutely get bound up if you try to slam it home on any sort of angle.

This also has to do with the fact that although Remington advertises this as a complete steel barrel and chamber, the very end after you pull the bolt completely out has a plastic liner. The combination of a looser fitting bolt and plastic lining make the bolt bind up if you try to go too fast or push it in on an angle. There is a little metal flip switch on the left side of the rifle that stops the bolt from coming out when reloading. I have come to understand it can get dented or become loose the more racking is done but no one has reported a complete break.

It is a little strange to lift and is a very cheap design but that is one of the areas you can get away with cutting costs I suppose. There have been a couple reports of the bolt handle breaking but if you send it back to Remington they will replace it. Slow and steady is how the needs to be handled. The safety off to the right works well, but it's a bit clunky and could possibly be in a better position.

However, it's a safety so long as it works then who cares. The stock scope that comes premounted is not built for distance and it is nothing special. It will serve its purpose which means you'll be able to lock onto your target at a greater distance than your eyesight and hit that target after minimal, if any, adjustments out of the box. It is meant for anything under yards but once you get past yards the target is exponentially smaller.

When you grab it for the first time, I don't care who you are, it feels like a toy. It is light, slightly unbalanced in the arms, and just doesn't quite give the same satisfaction as holding a rifle that has been solidly constructed.

That said, the light feel can be a positive, especially to those who aren't used to holding a rifle, or those a bit smaller in stature. It was fairly comfortable in my hands, but maneuvering them around the rifle, say when unloading and reloading because the clip has no ejection spring , my skin would catch the unrefined jagged edges.

The butt stock felt slightly short, which didn't help the toyish feel. It may be that because I'm just over six feet tall and have ridiculously long arms it felt this way, but I'm pretty sure the butt stock is shorter from end to trigger than other similar models. Then with it being light, it simply put, felt odd. That feeling is not experienced across the board and when I had my partner, of just over 5-feet in height, hold it she managed it well with no complaints of it feeling too short or too light overall.

I couldn't pull the trigger but from I gather it is not the worst available, and may just take a little getting used to. The bolt action wasn't the smoothest and was easily bound if pushed in at any angle. In all honesty, if you and the gun are capable of 1 inch groups at yards, and all you plan to do is stretch it out to maybe yards at most, that setup might just be fine for informal plinking fun.

I would suggest at least get a better scope though. A decent scope is the only way to hit long range targets with any consistency. Someone mentioned the SWFA fixed power scopes, thats a good idea.

A 10x would do nicely. Good glass, good reliable internals. And if you want adjustable magnification albeit at the cost of a track record for reliability the Primary Arms FFP!

How does it shoot? Did it zero ok? What is its accuracy like? How about reliability? At what distances do you shoot your 22lr? Jan 16, Midwest, SD. Find a local long range club or match, seek them out through any local gun shops or any other means you have available and go spectate and Make friends.

Op just shoot your rifle and enjoy it. It will shoot fine. I hit man size targets with my ak74 at yards open sights or red dot. Im just holding over. You should be able to have fun with what you have. I know it shoots better than an ak. Last edited: Sep 26, My 22 I shoot to about yards. Reactions: EpsilonActual , wade2big and CuTm. I upgraded the scope to a bushnell 10x and shoot only factory ammo through it. It has maybe rounds on it since my dad gave it to me in , almost all on animals.

It's a really rough and cheaply built rifle but it shoots fine and mine actually feeds and extracts really reliably. The bolt stop is a small latch on the left side of the receiver. On the inside, it moves a half-moon piece of steel to act as the bolt stop.

Just from loosely working the bolt, this half moon started to take on a dent. Some other owners have complained about their bolt stops failing. I can forgive a cheap stock on a cheap rifle, a few things on the stock were a bit weird. The trigger guard looks like it was designed ugly on purpose. The buttpad is pretty hard. Most rifles free-float the barrel as an easy way to get more consistency.

Then, there are those plastic, molded in sling attachment points. Of course the scope sucks. When talking about features and quality, I always try to relate those to the price point of the rifle. Let me just be blunt: the Savage Axis is the same price and is not so sucky. The Ruger American is a bit more in price and a lot better and the Remington is also a lot better than the Meyers' New "Pocket Rocket". Figured the scope was worth that, both gun and scope are mint. I had one in.

It was the worst bolt action that I have owned. It shot well enough but the action was junk. It would jam up trying to chamber a round. I traded it in on a Savage in Uhhhh go shoot it and find out. Why ask after you bought it? If it has the synthetic stock you might find the recoil sharper than expected. I traded for a Mossberg with a synthetic stock in Being bent over a bench always increases the perceived recoil on any rifle for me.

If it's fairly accurate, what's not to like after sight in?
