On Ambergris Caye, you will find less as you get closer to town. In more remote areas, they can be annoying. Especially as the sun sets and the wind is low. An oily barrier works best from protecting your tender skin from these little jerks. They are so small that it prevents them from biting. I like a nice oily bug repellent that leaves them choking and drowning, it does double duty but coconut oil or baby oil seems to do the trick.

I have encountered them only on the mainland and can find no reason for their locations. At this point, you can prepare yourself for a bite that is SO itchy that by evening, you will want to rip your own ankles off. These types of cowards always seem to go for the ankles. They turn red, almost purple and itch uncontrollably. At this point, Benadryl and lots of it and the sweet slumber that it brings is your only remedy.

Again, they are so small, that this oily layer works wonders. The name makes sense. Like doctors, these yellow flies are known for taking blood. But unlike MOST doctors, they are incredible dim-witted. They are aggressive about following you about but oh so easy to kill. These yellow-bellied flies are a bit larger than your average housefly and have more of a pointed abdomen. I am sorry to say but I know NO way to prevent their sting.

Please help me with this one! A sting that startles me and allows me to slap and kill the slow poke fly. Some people are highly allergic.. All previous beasts described bite to get blood to make their babies.

These ANTS just bite for the hell of it. Like bees, they sting just to be mean…protect themselves…. If you are on the beach, no problem. But if you are in a forested area…wear closed shoes. Step into the Caribbean Sea gingerly because you could step on anemones and sea urchins that can not only deliver pain but inject a toxin into your system that is poisonous and likely to cause an infection if not treated immediately.

Like mosquitoes, they would like nothing more than to sting you. How bad are mosquitoes, bugs and insects in Belize? Botflies Robots? Water hazards Step into the Caribbean Sea gingerly because you could step on anemones and sea urchins that can not only deliver pain but inject a toxin into your system that is poisonous and likely to cause an infection if not treated immediately.

Learn about insect behaviour First, find out if, and exactly where, illnesses transmitted by insects are occurring at your destination. What is their habitat? Do they prefer the indoors, outdoors, or both? When are they most active, during the day or night?

What are their peak biting times? Are they present year-round or do they have seasonal cycles? Do they live in urban, suburban, or rural areas? Are they capable of carrying illnesses transmitted to humans? If so, which ones? Use complementary methods For optimal protection, use multiple methods of insect-bite prevention — mainly through skin protection, clothing protection, and proper use of a bed net.

The following are physical barriers that you can use to prevent any insect from coming close to you in the first place.

Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting, long clothing cotton and linen as much as possible. Ensure that all door and window screens do not have tears or holes and that they are tightly fitted. Cover any food, drinks, compost and garbage. Always wear shoes, both indoors and outdoors. Sleep or rest under an insecticide-treated bed net. Use chemical barriers like repellent and insecticide to prevent mosquito, tick, sandfly or blackfly bites.

Re-apply on shorter times if you find that you are starting to get bitten. Note that repellents destroy items containing crystal or plastics so be careful if you wear jewellery or glasses. Treat clothing, shoes, boots, and gear with permethrin that kills insects on contact. Physical exertion and panic cause the venom to travel through your body much faster.

Lie down and stay calm; have someone carry you to a doctor. Do not cut the wound, use a tourniquet, or ingest alcoholic beverages. Anemones and sea urchins live in Belize waters. Some can be dangerous if touched or stepped on. The long-spined black sea urchin can inflict great pain, and its poison can cause an uncomfortable infection. The spines easily slip through the rubber, and the urchin is encountered at all depths. If you should run into one of the spines, remove it quickly and carefully, disinfect the wound, and apply antibiotic cream.

If you have difficulty removing the spine, or if it breaks, see a doctor—pronto! Local remedies include urinating on the wound if nothing else is available. Tiny brown gel-encased globules called picapica produce a horrible rash; look for clouds of these guys around any coral patch before getting in.
