Believe me when you go for 3D you have no choice, since there are so many topics that will need a lot of time to "Dig" and "Learn". AAA games usually have got an engine written ad-hoc for the game or for a little set of games. DirectX supports sound, music, input, networking, and multimedia. Well in that catagory i pull these out. And ya know what, they are all OpenGL based syntax, so its very very easy to learn them all. And they are all compleatly platform independent. Which in my mind is much more important than any thing else. Because even though Windows is on top right now, dosnt meen it will be there for ever.

There is a very nice version of Linux comming out soon called Lindows. Which, i feel will take a very large hold of the market, and Mac is making a comback. To leave these OSs out of your possible money circuit, is simply stupid. I mean that is like selling only chacolate milk in a store.

Even though it is a much larger piece of the market, strawberry milk is still making money. You want to start off with the biggest piece of pie. So you get the most bang for your buck.

That is why I use OpenGL. Yeah, thats why i dont code when im hungry. This has nothing to do with OpenGL in general, though. Follow Us. Chat in the GameDev. Back to For Beginners. I'm just looking for what's easier to learn and use for someone that hasn't any experience in these topics yet.

Cross platform abilities way less for me than the learning curve. I'm not trying to start a war here, but I just wanted to know I hope you want to share your own experiences and arguments and thanks.

Cancel Save. IceSheep I think that DirectX is only for the Windows platform. And OpenGL is cross platform. If you want to learn OpenGL I suggest that you buy a book. It is only taste that separate them. I would say DX, also because of the better documentation.
