In the center of the island used to be an ancient Hawaiian fishing shrine, but it was destroyed by a tsunami in In the Hawaiian language, "popoi'a" means "rotten fish. The area is also great for snorkeling, especially in the summer. Here you'll find a good population of green sea turtles and other rare creatures. Flat Island is also a seabird sanctuary.

One thing to watch out for is the occasional appearance of Portuguese man-of-war and box jellyfish. They usually invade the beaches days after a full moon, but may appear on other days as well. Their sting can cause a painful rash with even the slightest touch. Watch out for warning signs posted on the beach. Kailua Beach has suffered from erosion for many years, but recently the situation has worsened after several days of high surf in mid-January when even the Kailua boat ramp partially collapsed.

High surf took a chunk out of the shoreline at the south end of the beach, leaving exposed roots of trees. Some of the trees that were close to the shoreline were leaning dangerously or fell down, so that city crews were forced to cut them. Families usually come out in the early afternoons or weekend in the mid-mornings. The beach is long and it is easy to walk a short distance to claim your own quiet space on the sand. The views are stunning with cerulean-blue ocean as far as the eye can see, enhanced by several small islands off-shore that act as bird sanctuaries.

Close to shore the shallow ocean is buffered from the surf by the outer reefs, making it safe for children and families. On-shore ocean breezes cool off this east-facing beach all day long, and park trees back up onto the beach to provide some afternoon shade. Kayaking: There are several nearby kayak rental companies that rent kayaks with wheeled carts to roll them down to the beach. This activity is best on light-wind days or in the mornings before trade winds pick up.

Windsurfing: Launch area is by the east end boat ramp and has its own parking. Buoys separate the open ocean windsurfing area from the near-shore designated swim area. Steady wind at this location makes this spot a popular Oahu windsurfing destination. Beach bike path: A five-mile-long regional bike path stretches through the park, and onward to Lanikai to the east, and downtown Kailua to the west.

Adventure tip: It can get busy here on the weekends, so you may want to try nearby Lanikai Beach or Kalama Beach Park if the park is too crowded. Choose weekdays for your visit to avoid crowds.
