Why does everyone hate kreayshawn

2022.01.12 23:53

This interview. But hating Kreayshawn is about as justified as hating the sun for giving you sunburn, or hating the Internet because someone took a picture of you trying to deep throat that Bud Light bottle at that graduation party that one time and it ended up on LMAO Twitpics. You can't fairly hate Kreayshawn or her wares because her hype — at least, within the mercilessly thirsty blog and Tumblr shantytown, anyway — has usurped her everything.

She is controversy bite-sized. As such, her music — mostly tumbling drone atmospherics and stylized stream-of-conscious lyrics that function best when you listen to it with your brain turned off — gets rated with equally forceful paws. It can only ever fail. It's not a firm actualization of the devolution of rap music, it's a formula for getting rich, son.

V-Nasty though? Yeah, she's an ignorant broad. How can we help you? I love it cos it's ghetto. She got … this sucks! She was 15 at the time too, and she got her daughter's name. So, you know, we're basically a bunch of grown-ass children.

The video for Gucci Gucci sees Kreayshawn hanging out with those grown-ass children in LA, and it's largely responsible for where she is now, sitting on a large not quite million-dollar, she says major-label record deal. Its message, about designer labels being for "basic bitches", is a far cry from the supposedly riot-motivating consumerism of mainstream rap songs.

In America, look at the crime rate. Everyone wants stuff, but on a minimum wage, they can't afford it. So they're gonna rob and steal and kill for it. It sucks. I was still, I was happy, I did my creative …" She pauses, thinks, then bursts out laughing: "Shit! I can't talk. I was selling weed. But it's different. If nothing else, Kreayshawn is contrary, which might be why she's attracted so much negative attention. Why does she think she's been such a target? But she does everything more poppy.

The stuff she rhymes about, she's a fuckin' rapper. Being black in Oakland is a well-known walk in the park. Before Kreayshawn became famous on the Internet, she dealt Adderall, worked at Ikea, slung coffees at Starbucks, and worked as what WWD calls "an interior landscaper," whatever that is. She also talked her way into film school in Berkeley even though she never finished high school, and convinced the dean to give her a scholarship because she couldn't afford tuition.

She dropped out after eight months. You can't tell me that my idea sucks,'" she says. Regardless of all the hate that gets thrown her way, we can't help but admire her tenacity and her ballsiness in the face of a scene that fucking hates her and everything she stands for. And, even if you despise everything she releases from here on out, no one can deny that "Gucci Gucci" was a breath of fresh air in We should, at the very least, let her enjoy the success of that and congratulate her on getting to this point.
