Who said shazam
The series lasted just five issues before disappearing after Marvel Comics got involved…but not in the way many would expect. After M. Enterprises character an infringement on trademarks that it owned. The case was settled out of course, with M. And yet…. Between that point and Carol Danvers assuming the name three decades later, no less than five different characters called themselves Captain Marvel, only to fail to keep enough interest to prevent their replacement in favor of the next big thing.
I remember Goober exchanging comic books with Opie, but I don't consciously remember Gomer doing this. CharlesKnox 31 months ago. Fun fact! The Original Captain Marvel is the first live action box office super hero. Martin CharlesKnox 31 months ago.
Captain Marvel was a very popular character in the 40s, even eclipsing Superman. This is one of the factors that lead to DC then known as National Periodical Publications to sue Fawcett for plagiarism, in a court case that last over a decade and ended with Fawcett settling out of court, giving DC the rights to the character.
Superhero comics in general were declining by that point in favor of Crime and Horror comics. Like 2 Reply Delete. Delmo 31 months ago. Martin Delmo 31 months ago. There was another Captain Marvel between the original and Marvel's version. Published by Myron Fass, a small time publisher in the early 60s, this Captain Marvel was an android who could separate his body parts by saying "Split" and "Xam" to later reassemble.
Ill conceived and badly drawn by Human Torch creator, Carl Burgos, who should have known better it only lasted for a few issues before its well deserved cancellation. Myron Fass later tried to sue Marvel when Marvel introduced their own character but to no avail.

Once established, it became a whole big deal in the comics featuring Billy Batson and Captain Marvel that the bad guys would have to go out of their way to keep Billy from saying the magic word, like this bit from Whiz Comics 13 by Parker and Beck Luckily, Billy is still a smart kid despite his youthful exterior by the way, is that seriously the requirement?
If Billy had a lisp, he wouldn't be allowed to become Captain Marvel? I did a whole Drawing Crazy Patterns on times when villains tried to keep Billy from saying "Shazam" here. But as licensing money became a bigger part of superhero success, it was obvious that DC's Captain Marvel -- who had to go by "Shazam! A slightly older, more-cynical teenaged Billy Batson lives in a foster home alongside Freddy, Mary, and a diverse roster of kids who would become part of the "Shazam Family" after Billy was given his powers.
This version, largely the same one found in April's movie, stars in a new Shazam! Maisel which doesn't need to change its name -- what gives? At least the Billy Batson version has the "Shazam" name all to himself. That is, apart from the music-identification app and its spinoff game show. The kid really can't catch a break, can he?
