The trail swings left, switchbacks right, descends to a small brook, and diagonally crosses a woods road at 0. Keep a sharp lookout for blazes, as the trail passes numerous side trails and old woods roads. Notice as you ascend over the next quarter-mile the transition from the beech and maple of the northern hardwood forest into the red spruce and balsam fir of the boreal forest. Conifers are better adapted to the higher winds and colder temperatures of the upper mountain than their leafy cousins.
The thin soils and exposed ledges of the upper mountain again favor the conifers, whose root systems are better adapted to sparse conditions than those of deciduous trees. The shelter was removed because campers were laying waste to the surrounding forest. Please respect the revegetation efforts underway around the old shelter and remain on the trail. Save your picnic lunch for the sturdy ledges just ahead. The whitish-gray rock here is a close cousin of granite, known as the Kinsman Quartz Monzonite.
These rocks were formed by the collision of Africa with North America million years ago. Once in Canaan make a left onto Route towards Orange and Rumney. At roughly a half mile north of Canaan make a right at the Cardigan State Park sign. Bear right after crossing over a stream roughly two and a half miles. The road to the parking area will be on your left, roughly a mile past the creek closed in winter and early spring. Get off on Exit 24 and head west toward Bristol and proceed 6 miles until you reach the town center.
Make a right onto Route 3A towards Plymouth. After about two miles make a left on at the Stone Church just before the lake. Go three mile past the crossroads and bear right about 3 mile from 3A.
Three miles from there make a left. Take a right from the church and stay on the route until you reach the lodge. Cardigan can be climbed at any time of year, though April and May are not recommended due to mud season and June is home to black fly season.
Be prepared in winter on Mt. Cardigan summit. The smooth, completely exposed summit can be dangerous in icy conditions especially from the east. Bring crampons and if approaching from the east Holt Trail an ice axe because the summit is exposed it is very susceptible to heavy winds. Dress according and use caution especially in winter.
