Activated carbon chemically alters chlorine and turns it into chlorine ions this means it now holds a negative charge. Ion exchange resins removes heavy metals through electric charge transfer. Other ion exchange resins, like the ones used in coffee machines, work by exchanging limescale forming minerals — namely calcium and magnesium — with other minerals such as sodium or potassium. When all of the tiny channels in the water filter are completely soaked, the contaminants have a greater chance of being adsorbed, absorbed or chemically altered within the filter.

This allows only clean filtered water to run through. Even a small area of carbon makes a huge difference — a gram of carbon has a surface area of more than three thousand square meters or thirty-two thousand square feet , because of its high microporosity. Therefore, not utilizing all the carbon available in the filter would prove detrimental to the filtration process. Activated carbon is a fine black powder that contains micropores.

Since water filters use activated carbon, there is often carbon dust that gets dislodged during initial use. Soaking and flushing your water filter helps remove this carbon dust. You will notice that when you flush your filter, these black flecks flow out with the water. Discard this water and continue using your filter. Refrigerator water filters may need to be flushed a few times. Run one or two gallons of water through the filter before drinking.

If you still notice cloudy water or black flecks coming from the water dispenser or in your ice tray then it probably needs flushing again. Remember to discard the first one or two trays of ice after a water filter change. While the filters are securely sealed, there may be packing material like Styrofoam flakes or plastics lodged in the device. Soaking and flushing your water filter helps remove any clogs that may be blocking the fine pores of the filter.

Most water filters also have a mesh or screen at the top before the water can reach the filter itself. This mesh may also be clogged. Soaking and flushing the filter removes any small particles and frees up the pores for optimal filtration.

As soaking your water filter helps increase the filtration capacity and removes any clogs, it makes filtration faster. Remember to use only cold water, do not use boil host water for the soaking process. Again use the cold water to clean the surface.

Use clean water only, and the hard water may have micro bacteria and dust that may get trapped on the surface of the filter. The most filter uses twist and lock mechanism so check the process in the manual and connect the filter correctly.

Use warm water while soaking your filter. Dry the device for a while before attaching the filter. It will ensure that the water is cleaned and ready to drink. When you remove all the water from the filter and keep it for drying, the filter gets contracted during the drying process causing it to lose its actual size. If the filter is used for several days, there will be tiny particles trapped inside the filter, which now start clogging the small holes of the filter.

Additionally, the dry water filter will not get completely dry from the inside. There will be water inside the filter trapped in the membrane. This membrane will have micro bacteria, which will start multiplying when the condition is suitable.

If you put the filter longer than 1 to 2 days for drying, there is a high chance that the filter will become the home of the harmful bacteria. It will be full of micro bacteria in a few days, making your water contaminated when you use it next time.

Your Brita filter may have lost its ability to filter the water. Once the micro bacteria take over the filtration, it is hard to remove them. The only way left out is to replace it with the new one. Therefore, the manufacturer generally recommends not drying the filter. If you do not want to use the filter for few days, then store it in the refrigerated area.

The minus temperature in the refrigerator stops the growth of the micro bacteria and protects your filter from contamination. It will keep your Brita in the environment until you come back and start using it. It is recommended that before using the filter again, keep the filter for 10 to 15 minutes to soak the water again. It is much more expensive than activated charcoal, so do keep that in mind.

Good question. I don't know how long coffee filters would stay intact after being soaked in water for a long time.

Plus, there's the question of how to seal them. Maybe by sewing them shut? How safe is the polyethylene plug in drinking water, even with the filter. Will it affect the taste or smell in the water.? Some quick web research shows that polyethylene is a pretty common type of plastic. I personally doubt it'll affect the taste or smell of the water at all, but for a definitive answer, you might want to ask a plastics manufacturer or a chemist.

You can make any filter last longer if you follow a few simple steps. Rinse filter with distilled water regularly between uses. Chlorine and especially fluorine are very corrosive so the sooner you remove them from the filter medium the less time they will have to bind and deteriorate it.

The warmer the water the faster those two minerals will do their damage. If you ever accidentally flow warm or hot tap water thru the filter, flush it immediately with cool distilled water to remove any chlorine or fluorine that may have been in the unfiltered tap water. Soft things like tea bags or cloth will be the first thing to start to dissolve into your drinking water caused by Cl and FL.

On the Electronic or Volumetric fill models, the indicator light will blink after every time you fill the reservoir and close the Fill Lid. On volumetric pour models the indicator light will blink after every time you pour from the pitcher. Timing estimates are based on average household usage. I have an electronic filter indicator. The shelf life of an unused, sealed filter is indefinite. If the filter is more than a year old, we recommend soaking it for 15 minutes before first use, as filters can dry out. If water gets trapped under sleeve of a Pattern Series Pitcher, air-dry upside down at room temperature.

Always remember to remove filters before washing. When reassembling your pitcher after cleaning, be sure to correctly reinstall your reservoir and lid.

The reservoir has a vent hole in the area that holds the filter. Make sure the vent is facing the back of the pitcher. For lids, the Fill Lid feature should be positioned toward the back. Don't keep your Brita in bright sunlight, as it can cause algae to grow.

Keep your Brita in the refrigerator if you plan to be away for longer than a couple of days. If water gets trapped under the sleeve of a Pattern Series Pitcher, air dry it upside down at room temperature. One possible cause for an apparent leak may be overfilling. Do NOT fill with water past the max fill line on bottles and pitchers. Water can overflow into or over the handle when you pour resulting in what appears to be a reservoir leak.
