Figure 5. The Dashboard Figure 6 , along with displaying a summary of the overall status of clients, offers access to comprehensive reports that can also be delivered by e-mail using SQL Server Reporting Services. Reports are HTML-based, enabling system administrators to drill down for more detailed information, but custom reports are not supported.
Figure 6. Tight integration into existing Windows systems means that FCS is unlikely to require infrastructure changes or a steep learning curve. Forefront Stirling, the next generation of Forefront products, promises dynamic responses to threats detected by Forefront applications, removing the need for support staff to identify the source of a problem and take appropriate action. If Stirling proves to be effective, then Forefront security products will have a significant advantage over the competition when deployed together.

This update is included in a new slipstream installation package of the Forefront Client Security client software.
For more information about the slipstream installation package, visit the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. Resolution The installation package for this anti-malware client update uses a revised version of the DIFx for Applications libraries that is natively compatible with Windows 7 and with Windows Server R2.
Issue 2 Occasionally scheduled scans are not initiated on certain Forefront Client Security clients that are running Windows Server. Resolution This problem is caused by a timing issue.
Issue 3 Generically or heuristically found malware that is detected by a scheduled scan is suspended. Resolution After you apply this update, all malware detected in a scheduled scan is automatically taken action upon regardless of the detection type concrete, generic, or heuristic when a Forefront Client Security policy is deployed.
Issue 4 After you install the anti-malware update , some managed Forefront Client Security clients on Windows XP and on Windows Server take longer to log on. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: A hotfix is available to resolve some problems with the Forefront Client Security anti-malware client File or folder path exclusions that are network-based are fully resolved into device paths before the scanning worker threads are initialized in the Forefront Client Security startup process.
Workaround Customers who are experiencing this issue and who cannot immediately apply this update can work around the issue by removing all file or folder path exclusions that are network-based. I regularly speak with McAfee, Symantec, Trend and others who rarely if ever mention Microsoft as a primary competitor. From through , Microsoft briefed me on Forefront progress and plans but then the company re-organized in and almost all communications stopped.
Wondering if it was me, I reached out to some analyst friends to see if Microsoft continues to discuss Forefront with others. I got a consistent response, "not really. Here's a few of my thoughts: 1. Forefront did have momentum out of the gate in but it faced a few obstacles. First, there is the traditional view that Microsoft products don't hit their stride until Rev 3. More importantly, we are talking about security professionals who are paid to be paranoid.
Microsoft would have to work hard to get the benefit of the doubt from this tough crowd. Microsoft tried to make endpoint security an economic rather than an IT issue but putting Forefront on its Enterprise Client Access License ECAL which made the product virtually free to companies that bought a bundle of client licenses for Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. It was an "all or nothing deal" whereby you had to buy client licenses for all desktops. Instead, multi-server management for Forefront Protection for Exchange Server FPE and Forefront Protection for SharePoint FPSP will be delivered through a streamlined solution for Microsoft messaging and collaboration workloads, on-premises and in-the-cloud, enabling higher productivity and lower management costs.
I'm not sure what's going on here, but Microsoft officials said they'd provide further details on the Forefront blog at a later date. I'm betting sooner rather than later Developers are in short supply. Here are the skills and programming languages employers need. Time for a Linux smartphone? The painful shame of owning an Android phone.
