Rebooting seems faster too as if I've cleaned up a bad program. Its risky because some programs may not be able to write data back in time but in my view, screw that program. Just make sure you've saved any docs you've got open. Who cares about the rest. Backup your registry. Change the long ms setting to a smaller number. Best to start with first. Hope that helps. I have used it by setting my laptop power options to sleep when I close the lid. But still, when I want to shut down, shut down now dang it!!!! My opinion is that Vista sucks anyway. This isn't the only problem I've had with it by a long shot. Sure there has been some potentially cool advances and tools for master users. But Microsoft doesn't seem to get that the important thing is the user experience, not their vision of how you should interact with your own comptuter.

So I'm moving to linux. I've built a kubuntu 8 beta with kde desktop server machine and I really like it. I have full control and can change what I want. There are plenty of productivity programs in the open source world so I don't miss hardly a thing.

I am probably soon going to partition this Vista laptop and setup ubuntu linux on it as my default OS and use Vista only for those rare things where I dont' have a choice program wise. I figure that if someone has to learn enough to make registry edits on Vista to make it work, why not just go for full control????? Microsft said Vista was a work in progress.

I went back through your instructions and I'm pretty sure I followed them correctly this time. I disabled everything under the Startup tab, then went to the Services tab, checked Hide all Microsoft services and then clicked on disable all. I also have Windows firewall turned on.

I restarted the computer and then shut it down and it shut down faster than it has in a long time. Your next instructions were to start re-enabling services one at a time, beginning with F-Secure, restart the computer and then shut it down.

I assume that once I re-enable a service, and if the computer shuts down ok, I should leave that service enabled and then enable another service, and so on. Posted 10 August - AM. I have now enabled all of the services. There were no real problems with shutting down after each service was enabled.

When I tried to shut it down this morning to see if there was still a problem, it again took a long time to shut down, but it finally did shut down. The problem seems to somehow be connected with leaving the computer on all night, however, it didn't use to have this issue. I leave this computer on all night because I need to access it remotely. In that case, Lighthouse is right. If not, it is the loop. Not necessarily, if you have made lots of changes, it takes a while to shut down. How was the shutdown issue resolved? Do as I posted earlier in this thread. That will get you out of the loop. For tracking the cause, that is more difficult.

I had this happen several times and never really found the cause. With Process Explorer you might be able to see what's running all the time. Download and run this and see whether you discover something. Do this before you kill the loop.
