Do this in the front and back. The most important part of using this type of sealant is to allow it time to "skin. Pick up the intake manifold and very carefully hold it above the gaskets. Lower it straight down very slowly, making sure every inch of the way that it is perfectly straight, so the gaskets are not disturbed.
Lay it down and install the bolts to center it. Tighten the bolts, starting in the center and working outward. Install the distributor, making sure the round gasket is on the bottom of the shaft.
Turn the rotor so it points at the mark you made on the housing. Now turn the rotor about 30 degrees counterclockwise.
When the distributor is installed and meshes with the camshaft gear, the rotor will turn clockwise as it meshes. Install the distributor and see if the rotor is located over the mark. If the rotor is off, lift the distributor and turn the rotor a little farther or a little less depending on how far away the rotor is from the mark. Continue until the rotor is right over the mark. Turn the distributor housing until the matchmarks on the base and intake manifold match. Tighten the distributor hold-down clamp with a wrench.
Connect the electrical wire to the distributor, or if it was removed from the negative side of the coil, connect it there. Install the distributor cap and vacuum advance hose. Plug the spark plug wires into the distributor. The firing order for a small block Chevy is and starts with the No. Count this firing order clockwise from the number 1 plug. All the even cylinders 2,4,6,8 are on the passenger side and the odd 1,3,5,7 are on the driver's side.
This being the case, take the first plug wire closest to the front, which is the No. Place the next wire, which is the No. So the same for the next two wires which, would be the 6 and 8. Install the remainder of items in reverse order of removal. When you're finished reconnecting the above items, retighten the intake manifold bolts one more time. Project is behind schedule but I've hit a snag - the gasket set that came with the engine, included an intake manifold gasket that has the rear ports on the gasket blocked off with a little metal piece within the gasket.
My actual cylinder head, and intake manifold both stock have holes in that location. The Haynes Manual says that "some models have the rear passages blocked off" and to make sure the gasket is installed that way on those models to ensure proper amount of coolant flow, but it does not specify which models this pertains to. From what I can tell, the intake would get coolant flowing through it either way, from the thermostat to the rear of the intake where the screw-in fitting is that goes to the heater core.
What I want to be sure of, is that if I leave that passage blocked off by the gasket, if I am starving the cylinder head itself of coolant. I do not remember if the original motor I took out of the vehicle had this blocked off or not. There are coolant passages in the front of each cylinder head that mate up to the intake, I just can't figure out how else the cylinder head would get coolant flowing through it all the way to the rear of the cylinder heads without this hole open, but I admit I do not know much about cylinder heads, or if they have some sort of other passages in them that line up with coolant passages in the block that would still feed them in such a manner to allow flow all the way through them, with these rear gasket holes blocked off.

There are three styles: , known as TBI style and vortec style. The early small block Chevy intakes before had six bolts per side and they were all drilled perpendicular to the cylinder head. In , Chevy still used 6 bolts per side, but the center two bolts were at a slightly different angle, this is known as the TBI pattern.
In , when GM introduced the Vortec V-8, they eliminated the old style 6 bolts and went with just four bolts per side, two at the front and two at the rear. So when shopping for your small block intake manifold, please be sure to know your cylinder head bolt pattern before you buy.
