People who take part in the process of politics are called politicians. It is hoped and understood that those who serve in the political arena must be guided by the principles of public service and not be swayed by any form of self-service or self-interest.
They must work for achievement of peace and harmony in the society in which they live. This peace is not merely the absence of violence; it penetrates much deeper. It can only prevail when fair and equitable justice is provided to all. Despite fully well knowing that such a society is actually a utopia which is well-nigh impossible to achieve, the aims and objectives of the politicians must be to make efforts for the same and ensure that people live in peace and freedom.
But it is sad to say that this observation is itself a chimera, more so in the Indian context. The actual world of politics, politicians and their working seem to suggest just the opposite.
But, is it actually so? Have things come to such a pass that all hope is lost? When India became free in , its politics was driven by idealism. After freedom was achieved, they had a sense of achievement and so it was easy for them to maintain high standards of moral values, ethics, transparency and probity in public life. For him, politics without ethics and moral principles was not desirable. As per his political philosophy, life must be governed by truth, morality and self-purification.
It was further tied up with truth and non-violence. He also prescribed that the country should be concerned with the morals of her leaders. But s onwards, the politicians failed to maintain these standards which declined at a pretty fast rate. Corruption by the politicians, their relatives and numerous sycophants overwhelmed the body politic of India. They were joined by corrupt bureaucrats and industrialists. Anybody and everybody joined this party and there was no one to complain to.
Everyone was completely engrossed in the shameless plunder and organised loot of the public wealth. The masses suffered in silence as there was no one to speak or fight on their behalf. There are many other, but all of them include power, and authority. Ministering means serving. We change the meaning of words in India and indianise their practice, be it Ministry, secularism, socialism or even democracy.
This is perhaps not absolutely incorrect as the words have three kinds of meaning—literal, contextual and deeper in Indian sabdarthha,bhabarthha and gudharthha. Operational implications of these meanings will make a profound impact on politics and will make it popular. Second, sevaniti will make politicians service-oriented, not power-mongering, influence-peddling, profit- seeking etc.
If every other job like the top ones, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, and Indian Economic Service, are called service, why should we not call Parliament and Legislative career as service?
An incorrect under-standing or inappropriate application creates unfavourable and unhealthy attitudes to politics, which are not so good for a democracy.

These emotions, fueled also by resentment of outsiders, can be manipulated by regressive political forces to reinforce inequalities, persecute outsiders, and stoke wars. But it is the same with other nations; and if retelling the story of one nation excludes other peoples and nations or worse, disparages or invokes hatred of them , then it leads in the direction of, at best, insularity and stagnation, and at worst, militarism, oppression and war.
The result is an increasingly viciously enforced cultural orthodoxy, together with a crushing cultural cringe. The overall arc of post-settlement history must be twisted beyond recognition to confect an orthodox patriotic mythology. There are plenty of heroic Australians , to be sure ; just as there are plenty of villains , and everything in between.
Nothing more and nothing less; special in some ways and not in others; which is precisely the negation of every orthodox patriotic myth.
