A degree in communication sciences and disorders CSD from the College of Health Sciences offers many unique and diverse opportunities for those wanting a career in the broad field of healthcare. Through our undergraduate and graduate CSD programs, you will be uniquely qualified to pursue a rewarding clinical career in speech-language pathology or audiology, as well as related careers in education, healthcare and rehabilitation.
Our programs also prepare you to seek advanced degrees in fields spanning the sciences underlying speech, language, and hearing. Speech-language pathologists are clinical specialists who diagnose and treat individuals throughout the life span experiencing speech, voice, language, feeding, or swallowing disorders in settings ranging from educational school environments, to hospital and rehabilitation centers, and to private practice.
Similarly, audiologists are healthcare professionals who provide patient-centered care in the prevention, identification, diagnosis, and treatment of balance, hearing, and other auditory disorders. The NCCU Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic provides speech, language, and hearing evaluations and treatment services for monolingual and bilingual clients from birth through adult age. Additionally, the Department of CSD offers online prerequisite courses needed to apply for admission to most graduate programs in speech-language pathology.

The mission of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is to prepare culturally and socially responsible speech-language pathologists who engage in ethical and evidence-based clinical practice, research, and leadership initiatives for the promotion of effective communication across the lifespan for the well-being of a global society.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders fosters a community of culturally competent scholars, practitioners, and students by utilizing evidence-based practice in the implementation of diverse academic and clinical learning experiences while demonstrating a commitment to clinically relevant research and community service initiatives. Upon participating in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, graduates will be able to:. With the exception of Aural Rehabilitation, each prerequisite course and a minimum of 25 guided observation hours must be completed before a student can enroll in a clinical practicum. Students who have not completed all of the prerequisite courses can be admitted to the Department of CSD. Two-Year Track Course Sequence. A student admitted unconditionally to the Department of CSD who has completed all prerequisite courses including basic science courses is expected to graduate in 5 — 6 semesters including summer of full-time study and clinical practicum.
Students are expected to earn at least 60 graduate credit hours in order to complete the program. Two-year students have an undergraduate degree in communication disorders or a n undergraduate degree in a related field but have completed all of the prerequisite coursework in communication disorders. Three-Year Track Course Sequence. These individuals have an undergraduate degree in a related field but need to complete the required prerequisite courses before beginning graduate coursework and clinical practicum.
A student admitted unconditionally for the three-year sequence is expected to graduate in 7—8 semesters including summer of full-time study and clinical practicum. Areas of Specialty Focus. The Department of CSD offers graduate students the opportunity to enhance their professional competencies by specializing in areas of service.
Faculty members coordinate these areas of specialization and determine the eligibility criteria and application process. Upon selection, students participate in distinct educational, professional development, or practicum experiences in speech-language pathology to foster their knowledge and skills in a specific area.
These areas may require students to complete courses and practicum experiences in addition to the expectations in the typical course sequence. Areas of specialization include:.
