There is no way that I would have ever attributed a no kernel message to a loose screw in the combo drive however that was the root of my problems! Check the seating of all memory, hard drive, combo drive etc before blaming software would be my advise based on biter experience!

I gave the beast an hour of quality time, took it apart, blew out the dust and reassembled the thing. I diagnosed the problems all to stem from a slightly loose screw that locks the combo drive into the bay allowing the dvd drive to creep in the socket. Hence the device in bay not recognised message and failure to record drives in the cmos at POST although why this should effect hdd recognition remains a mystery.

I have since been able to emulate the faults by loosening the lock screw and applying slight pressure onto the drive. The kernel missing message has of course never appeared since the hard drive is recognised by cmos. I wonder how many hard drives motherboards and complete units etc etc have been scrapped because of a similar loose locking screw? Great to hear that you have solved things at your end. I shall get out my screw driver set and see what I can find.

Posted 26 April - AM Hey there, in my adventures in trying to help people out, I see on forums some Vista users trying to boot their systems only to be greeted with a message something along the lines of the kernel is missing or corrupt. I have searched this problem and seen a wide and wild variety of advice given for this problem, such as your disk is toast, format and reinstall.

I personally have not had this problem, but thinking back to XP with the missing hal. So, I am scientifically curious if anyone has seen this error, and can give various logical reasons why it might occur, other than the obvious which is the kernel is indeed missing or corrupt, or their HDD or other hardware is failing. As far as actual corrupt files perhaps that is fixable by replacing files, or doing a repair install if such a thing still exists on Vista.

Posted 26 April - PM something along the lines of the kernel is missing or corrupt. Anything can be repaired. Vague problems lead to vague solutions or non-solutions like "you need to format and re-install". If you want a statistical estimation, just like INI settings, as well Posted 27 April - AM Yes, true as far as getting to the cause of an issue in a forum, the issue is most often vague or incomplete information.
