The biggest difference is that a container kml can contain not only other layers, but features. This is a foreign concept in ESRI, but you would have to think of a group layer not only containing other layers, but features. A Network Link in kml is roughly equivalent to an SDE layer, in that the data is not directly in the kml, but is contained and pulled from a remote site as needed.

I'm not sure how you would go from a network link to the ESRI equivelent though, as the service referenced in the network link is still going to return kml. You could get a snapshot of the data through one request and store it. Hopefully this is a little helpful. It sounds like an interesting, but definitely not trivial, project! Sunday, August 22, PM.
