Peter arrives on the scene, and whilst taking pictures of the humanoids, saves civilians caught in their wrath.

He returns to the Bugle to give Jonah and Robbie the pictures, much to their delight. Later that night, Peter meets up with Mary Jane, and they talk about Harry, who's angry at Peter for killing his father. MJ comforts Peter, who tells him the two will work it out. As this is going on, the alien symbiote attaches itself to Peter's shoe. At the Osborn Mansion, Harry steps out of the chamber filled with the Goblin formula and plots his revenge against Peter.

Peter successfully defeats Harry by tricking him into damaging his glider. However, Harry crashes into the alleyways and is unconscious.

Peter takes him to a hospital and leaves to return home. As Peter sleeps, the symbiote bonds onto him, giving him a jet-black suit. It increases Peter's powers, but it also brings out the dark side of him. He tests out the suit during a battle with gang members, and seeing how the suit is quickly tiring him, he returns to the red suit.

The next morning, Spider-Man visits the Daily Bugle, only to see it being bombed by Carlyle and his gang. They take Jonah hostage, with Spider-Man in pursuit. Inside the helicopter, Carlyle puts a collar onto Jonah, and warns him if he's far away from the transmitter, it would electrocute and kill Jonah.

He throws Jonah off the copter, and Spider-Man saves him. The battle culminates on a rooftop, with Spider-Man defeating Carlyle and removing the explosive collar from Jonah. That night, Spider-Man visits the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, who's been reported missing for the past few days. He picks up a video camera, revealing that Connors was testing an experimental serum that will allow his arm to be regenerated with the use of lizard DNA.

Whilst it regenerates his arm, Connors is transformed into the Lizard. A grief-stricken Spider-Man is attacked by the Lizard and chases him throughout the city.

Lizard evades capture by going into the sewers, with Spider-Man in hot pursuit. As Spider-Man dwells deeper in the sewers, he runs into Kraven, who is killing the infected and seeks to kill Connors. To make sure Spider-Man doesn't get involved, Kraven activates a death trap to kill the wall-crawler. Spider-Man escapes and lands in the Lizard's lair, where he does battle with Connors. After a long fight, Lizard escapes deeper in the sewers, and Spider-Man can't go any further. Successful in the mission, Spider-Man returns to the sewers to see the Lizard has defeated Kraven.

As he tries to turn Kraven into a lizard, Spider-Man stops him, but in the process, Kraven wakes up and stabs the Lizard, who reverts to Connors. Upset at this, Kraven turns his attention to Spider-Man.

Even with his upgrades, Kraven is defeated by Spider-Man, and the latter leaves to find Connors. He manages to find the doctor, who has injected himself with a much stronger serum, transforming himself into a Giant Lizard. Despite the disadvantage, Spider-Man defeats Connors in such a violent manner that makes the hero realize his black suit may be having a negative impact on him. Spider-Man defeats the remaining of the Lizard's experiments and leaves with Connors.

A fully recovered Connors agrees to help Spider-Man analyze a piece of the symbiote in exchange for Spider-Man saving his life.

At the Daily Bugle, Jonah sends Peter to the campus of Empire State University to take a picture of a vampire rumored to be attacking innocents. That night, Peter heads to ESU and takes a picture of the vampire while being attacked. The next night, Spider-Man goes to Connors' lab to analyze the symbiote for himself, pushing off Mary Jane on the phone in the process. As hours passed with no results, screams are heard outside and Spider-Man under the symbiote's influence confronts the vampire.

As the two battle, sunrise arises, and the vampire is weakened, allowing Spider-Man to defeat him. He takes the vampire to Connors, where Connors reveals the vampire's identity: Dr.

Michael Morbius, a world-renowned geneticist. Morbius tells the two his wife is responsible for his transformation. Spider-Man hears chaos amongst the city and confronts Morbius' wife Shriek. As Spider-Man is occupied with the gang members, Shriek commissions an obelisk and plans to control the entire city. Spider-Man thwarts the plan and Shriek escapes.

Spider-Man visits Morbius, who is currently dying. Morbius pleads Connors to take him to see his wife, to which Connors and Spider-Man agree to do. Out on the streets, Spider-Man shifts his focus on the Waste Tribe, where he breaks them down enough to find Shriek's location.

Spider-Man takes Morbius to Shriek, where Shriek reveals she caused the accident that transformed him into a vampire. She gives Morbius his strength, but in turn, turning him against Spider-Man. Spider-Man defeats Morbius by exposing him to the windows. Spider-Man deduces her powers came from the same element that forms his black suit.

Using the black suit, Spider-Man overcomes the mind games and defeats Shriek. A weakened Shriek uses the last of her powers to cure Morbius, reverting him back to normal, but leaving her in a comatose state. Peter goes to the Bugle, where Jonah sends him and rival photographer Eddie Brock to expose Spider-Man as a menace, and whoever comes to Jonah first with the pictures, they get the job as the staff photographer.

As Spider-Man scares off civilians during the shoot, a police officer informs him that he Spider-Man was mugging someone across town. Spider-Man swings to confront the imposter, who is easily beaten and exposed as Brock himself. Back at the Bugle, Peter gets the staff job and Brock is fired for his actions. Before Brock leaves, he swears vengeance against both Peter and Spider-Man. Peter overhears a conversation between two police officers, who plan to issue a manhunt for Spider-Man over his actions while wearing the black suit.

Peter contemplates not wearing the black suit for a little while until things simmer down. Sandman appears and robs an armored van. Peter follows Sandman to the subways, and as Spider-Man, does battle with him.

Seeing he is no match for Sandman's powers, Spider-Man reluctantly turns to his black suit, where he is overwhelmed by the suit and violently beats Sandman. Spider-Man bursts open a water pipe, seemingly killing Sandman as the water washes him away.

Under the symbiote's influence, Peter has a date with Mary Jane that goes sour, and as the two argue outside her home, he grabs her arm in an aggressive manner. Mary Jane breaks off the relationship, saddening Peter. Realizing that the symbiote is controlling him more and more, Peter retreats to the bell tower at a nearby church, where the intense sounds of the bell helps Peter remove the symbiote.

However, Brock followed him into the church and bonds with the symbiote just as it leaves Peter, transforming Brock into Venom. Brock finds an alive Sandman at Central Park, where he forces the latter to help him kill Spider-Man, or Sandman's daughter Penny will die on Brock's hands.

Peter returns to his apartment, where he suits up in the red suit once again as he goes to save Mary Jane. At the same time, Harry wakes up to hear about the current situation and thinks about his friends.

Arriving at the construction site, Peter sees that Brock and Sandman have held Mary Jane captive in a taxi suspended stories high. Brock orders Sandman to kill Peter while he watches. As the battle progresses, Harry arrives and dispatches the Sandman. Brock, revealing Mary Jane, jumps down and attacks Peter and Harry. Peter holds off Brock long enough for Harry to rescue Mary Jane and Sandman's daughter from the falling taxi. Seeing that the girl is in good hands, Brock lies to Sandman about the death of his daughter, infuriating him.
