The most recently backed up version is called the active version and the 6 older versions are referred to as inactive versions. The active version of any file is retained indefinitely unless it is deleted from the filesystem, in which case in is retained for 60 days from the date of deletion.

The inactive versions of a file are retained for 45 days from the day the first became inactive. Access to the local data datacenter is limited to UW-IT staff and approved technicians. All access requires two-factor authentication, a key badge and pin number. Within the data center, the tapes are stored in a locked silo, and only the tape library administrators, operations staff, and the vendor's field technicians are able to open it or eject tape media.
