The added benefit of the automatic advancement to E-5 is that the pay increase for advancement is instantaneous from the day the paperwork is signed whereas if a Sailor is promoted to E-5 on their merit and test taking, actually being paid for that advancement can take several months.


Most sailors take many years to advance to E When a Sailor is advanced to E-5, they can qualify for Basic Housing Allowance BAH which means they can have an additional amount of money each paycheck to go towards living off the base.
