Big Game Sport Fishing Big game sport fishing isn't just for the pros; this unique experience can be customized for families, friends or an executive gathering. Customer Gallery These are some images of our customers enjoying their time aboard the Kona Blue.

Captain David Crawford brought the Kona Blue over from Newport Beach, California in and made the crossing in just under two weeks. Now this sleek sport fishing vessel is available for you to hire and explore what is known as the best ocean fishing in the world. Mahimahi are one of the most prized game fish and know for their delicate, mild flavored filets.

One of the fasted growing fish in the ocean, these fish are plentiful throughout the world. As such, Mahimahi are constantly on the hunt for food. They school in large numbers and feed on small baitfish, needlefish, flying fish and squid. Mahimahi are known to congregate around floating structure or debris offshore which makes them particularly easy to target when debris is present.

Once hooked, they put on an acrobatic show and are extremely sporting to fight on rod and reel. They range in color from bright yellow to green to vivid blue when excited and can grow to 60 pounds or more. Mahimahi are typically found together or in large schools which makes hookups a common experience. Mahimahi can be found year-round in Hawaii, although he Winter months of December through April bring the best concentrations of these fish through the Hawaiian Islands.

In general, June through September is the best time of the year to fish in Kona Hawaii. The Summer season is a time when the greatest number of species of fish inhabit the waters in Hawaii. Hands down, the Big Island of Hawaii, and specifically the waters just off Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, are renowned for some of the best and most consistent Blue Marlin Fishing anywhere in the world.

The fishing grounds off Kona Hawaii are just a short minute run from the Honokohau Harbor and the waters are very calm which makes fishing in Kona a very popular activity to visitors to Hawaii. While Blue Marlin can be found in Hawaii year-round, the Summer months of June through September are generally the best time of the year to catch a blue marlin in Hawaii.

Anglers flock to the tiny fishing village of Kona Hawaii from all over the world since Kona Hawaii is considered one of the top destinations to catch a blue marlin any day of the year. If you catch a Blue Marlin in Kona Hawaii, you may keep your catch, however, most fishing charter captains prefer to catch and release Blue Marlin and other billfish in an act of conservation to preserve the fishery.

While Blue Marlin filets are sold in stores, it is not as preferable as Ahi Tuna, Ono Wahoo or Mahimahi which are more commonly served in local restaurants. Ahi, or Yellowfin Tuna begin to show up in May with the Summer months being the best time fish for them in Kona Hawaii. The best island in Hawaii to fish for Tuna is by far the Big Island of Hawaii, with the waters just offshore of Kona being the most productive tuna fishing grounds.

Mahimahi, sometimes called Dolphin Fish or Dorado, are most prevalent during the Winter months of November through March but are caught year-round in Kona Hawaii. Six species of billfish roam the Kona coast. In addition to blue marlin, there are black marlin, striped marlin, shortnose spearfish, Pacific sailfish, and broadbill swordfish.

Kona is the only place in the world where both blue and black marline weighing more than 1, pounds has been caught. A variety of smaller fish, including ono, ahi, mahi-mahi and kahala, can be found, along with many species of sharks.

The mako shark is a prized catch for its aggressive behavior once landed. These fish can weigh more than 1, pounds. Charter fishing boats are readily available on the Big Island. Many charters originate from Honokohau Marina, between Kailua-Kona and the airport. You can book an exclusive charter, which means the only people on board will be members of your party. Or you can arrange for a shared charter. In that case, the cost will be split with other people. Exclusive trips will cost a lot more.

In either case, advance reservations are recommended. When you book your charter, it might be a good idea to specify what type of fishing you want to do. Fishing styles vary depending on target fish and season. We caught the biggest Striped marlin of the Decade! People who have some fishing experience will appreciate the fact that they get to be involved in the sport fishing process.

On charter boats that use a deckhand, it's the deckhand's job to do everything on the deck. You'll never get to touch the tackle except to maybe reel in a fish. Most people enjoy their fishing experience a lot more while learning the ropes and getting involved, turning your Kona Hawaii fishing trip into more of a contact sport and less of a spectator sport. I've been running single handed charters and teaching people how to big game fish for over two decades now so you don't need prior experience to do this.

Another thing that sets me apart from the rest of the Kona fishing fleet is the fact that I find "fishing" to be boring. Let's go catching! The typical Hawaii fishing charter will wander around the ocean all day trolling lures and hope for the best. The trolling bite is always in a state of flux so if the trolling bite is good and there's enough action to keep things moving, then that's what we can do.

If not, the bottom bite is almost always a guarantee of catching big fish.
