This is simply an astonishing value for one of the greatest sports cars of the s. Picking the C4 does mean forgoing some of the performance gains that were introduced with successive generations. However, the C4, with a platform dating back to the mids, is a simpler, rawer machine and arguably a more engaging car to drive.

Also, unlike its younger brothers, the C4 has a distinctive period design which has long been been under-appreciated but is getting more and more notice of late.

This newfound respect is likely to lead to increasing values in the near future — especially as kids who grew up with C4 posters on their walls find themselves with enough spare cash to make that childhood fantasy come true. Thirteen years after the C4 first appeared, the first C5 generation Corvettes rolled into showrooms — a completely new design and better in most every way, save perhaps one controversial design element.

But under the skin all was good, with a new, all-aluminum 5. As with the later years of the C4, a base C5 Corvette is all a driving enthusiast needs. With a time of 4. And therein lies its charm: daily driver livability along with stunning performance capability and everyman affordability.

Note that there were a few special editions of the C5. Skip to content Australia guidelines Step-by-step Guide. Corvette stingray automatic vs manual. Cooler master silencio manual. The Corvette C5 is the fifth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette that was produced between and The cars were a significant update over their predecessor, the Corvette C4, and featured an all-new engine, a new frame, updated transmission location, and completely different styling.

The C5 was sold as both a Corvette coupe and a Corvette convertible, but first-year cars were only offered in coupe format. As an overhaul of the previous generation Corvette C4, the new C5 had very few parts in common with older versions of the car. The resulting car was regarded as being drastically better than before. The cars featured several innovations that were considered high-tech at the time. The C5 was used to test out several technologies that were used in other vehicles later on.

A heads-up display was offered that projected vehicle information onto the windshield, and an Active Handling System was introduced as an option in before becoming standard in The C5 was the first Corvette to feature drive-by-wire throttle, where the vehicle's acceleration is driven by an electronic sensor and gears, rather than through a mechanical pedal and linkage.

Variable effort steering was also used, which changes the level of power steering assist based on the speed of the vehicle. The Corvette C5 debuted with an all-new GM 5. IT was rated at horsepower and pound-feet of torque. The C5 was the first vehicle to use the engine, but it went on to be used in the Camaro and Trans Am.

During your routine cooling checks, it is acceptable to add some distilled water to top off your system. Check with your dealer before you add these products to make sure they are approved for your car. Do not remove the cap until all of the hissing has stopped. If the engine is overheated, do not remove the cap until the engine is completely cooled. C5 engine temperature is monitored with a gauge on the dashboard or by pressing the gauge button on the console to get a digital readout.

The radiator drain is located underneath the lower radiator hose on the right side of the radiator. You can find additional circuit breakers by removing a panel on the right-hand side of the floor in the passenger compartment. This circuit breaker box is located on the right-hand side of the engine compartment, next to the battery.

A plastic screw cover has been removed for this photo. As good as Dex-Cool is, that interval seems long. Avoid antifreeze products other than Dex-Cool, unless antifreeze with a silicate anticorrosive package is unavoidable. Adding SuperCool in the manufacturer-recommended proportion results in the coolant stabilizing at a lower temperature, once the thermostat is open. They restrict parts of the cooling system and, due to improved technology in engine parts that come in contact with coolant, are unnecessary.

Cooling system work may involve hot liquid. This could result in potential injury. The C5 tank cap is threaded to allow simple pressure relief. When the hissing stops, turn the cap further until it comes off.

If the engine is running hot, say, with a coolant temperature of F and above, allow the engine to cool before removing the cap. Changing coolant in an LS1 is a little more time consuming than it was with older Corvette engines, because the engine block coolant drains are not accessible when the engine is in the car. The left drain is hidden behind the engine mount bracket, and the right drain is behind the starter. This work may also involve working with hot engine parts or hot liquid.

We suggest you use some automotive work gloves such as those sold by Mechanix Wear. We like them because they protect hands but still allow good feel. The radiator drain is at the lower-right corner of the radiator. Open it and let it run until the flow stops, close the drain, and refill the system with water. Run the engine until the thermostat opens, shut off the engine, carefully release the pressure in the cooling system, and open the radiator drain again.

Repeat this procedure until the coolant coming out of the radiator runs clear. You may need to do this tedious flushing trick several times to get the water to run clear. Once the flushing is done, close the drain and fill the system with 6. Add distilled water until it reaches the base of the surge tank neck.

Start the engine and let it idle for a minute, then cycle engine speed from idle to 3, rpm and back, until coolant temperature reaches normal operating temperature. Remove the tank cap, observing the cautions discussed previously. If it is not, top off with distilled water, replace the cap, start the engine, and repeat the above procedure.

Most C5 fuses, circuit breakers, and relays are away from engine heat in a compartment behind the right front wheel next to the battery.

The PCM is in yet another cavity under the battery, which is a problem with C5s. Because of engine heat, batteries sometimes leak and the battery acid damages the PCM, which sits right under the battery. When buying a C5, be sure to carefully inspect this problemprone area. Removing the right wheel-well filler-panel exposes it. Additional fuses and circuit breakers, mainly interior and instrument panel cluster IPC items, are located under an easily removable panel at the front of the passengerside foot well under the carpet.

Carefully inspect the battery for leakage. This has been a problem area for C5s. Above: This photo shows the front of an LS engine without the radiator installed. Arrow 1 points to the HVAC belt and arrow 2 points to the serpentine belt. These should be checked and replaced if they show cracking.

If it has an aftermarket unit, check with the manufacturer to determine its required maintenance. CSDs are quite durable, but should you ever have to replace one, the job is easy. The alternator is driven by the customary serpentine belt system, but the LS1 uses two belts—one for the HVAC Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning System compressor and the other for the alternator and accessories.

The air filter element is contained in an easy-to-open housing in front of the radiator. It should be inspected every 10, miles and replaced, if necessary. Inspect it every 10, miles. If it is at all dirty, simply remove it, clean it, re-oil it, and put it back in place. If you liked this article you will LOVE the full book.
