It has to be initiated by an ConfigMgr admin. So that's not an issue. And a SUP does not deal with content. It's only about metadata. And this requires SQL replication. File replication between sites is more than just content -- disabling it will break the secondary site completely.

I log into our server via a Remote Desktop Connection so that we don't require However, when I log out of the server connection not log the server out of Windows, but rather just disconnected from RDC , the network scan manager seems to "lose" the printer and will not let us scan anything until I've re-logged in to the server and it refreshes the connection.
