As to issues of "program conflict", I've tried figuring out on the Windows 7 side if there's some kind of file type "ownership" issues.

Remember, Excel uses temporary files like "ED" and renames them to the actual xlsx file name.
If this process is blocked somehow, errors like your's can occur. You can use Process Explorer as well to identify the application that has an open handle to the files involved. Which storage do you use? Is it an internal drive in the server or a NAS device or something similar? I unselected "Details Pane" within windows explorer early on in the testing process. I just looked and it is not selected. The storage is Raid 10 located within the server.
Is this what you were looking for or are you asking for which Backup device? I am also having this same issue in our office. Only seems to be with laptops they use offline files and the H: drive is mapped by the user account so not by GPO or Login script. We dont know why its happing either and its driving the teachers mad! Hi, A network i support is having this issue. But the machines concerned do not have offline files enabled. Offline lifes is specificly disabled in group policy.
I have done a fair bit of Googling and found nothing. Does anyone have any other thoughts please? I presume a reboot of the workstation clears things? What about logging off and back on? If the home drive is not accessible from Word for example, can it still be accessed from Computer?
