The simple fix for this nasty problem is: Remove all of the destination folder where you intend to install Magento. Clear your browser cache.

We are setting up a Magento 2 store using Composer to manage packages whenever possible. This is working great for us, except that some third-party extensions we have purchased are not available to install via Composer. However, at least one such manually-installed extension required a Magento 2 - 'Area code not set:' after adding sample data So i've gotten magento 2 working all running fine, I've even started on my own theme, but i've tried to install the sample data after I've installed magento.
And it has returned 'Area code not set:' in terminal, below is a little run through of my steps.
