Bar-on handbook of emotional intelligence

2022.01.16 00:35

By comparison, if the Handbook of Emotional Intelligence is any guide, researchers promoting emotional intelligence appear to have built a virtual Tower of Babel, which may prove unsavoury to the knowledgeable reader. This general criticism should not detract from a number of individual chapters, which are first-rate. Among the best of these are contributions where the authors have attempted to come to grips with conceptual issues before providing empirical data which remains surprisingly scant or a new perspective on what components of emotional intelligence or related constructs might entail.

All rights reserved. In my opinion, the highest quality chapters argue for the former, since under the latter framework emotional intelligence begins to look like a mishmash of well-established personality constructs.

Do not be surprised, either, to find chapters where emotional intelligence is mentioned only in passing leaving the reader to infer relevance , or chapters where a construct that I believe should remain independent of it is brought under the large umbrella of emotional intelligence.

Indeed, it is suggested that emotional intelligence can be taught — an issue discussed in several interesting chapters that focus upon prevention strategies and interventions, particularly in school and clinical settings. However, like The Bell Curve, too many chapters in The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence provide one-sided arguments, touching on selected aspects and literatures, where clearly more balanced appraisal, discourse, and critical analyses were required.

Nevertheless, I recommend The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence to the general readership of Intelligence — who are well versed in the many unresolved problems that intelligence researchers have encountered — if nothing other than to serve as a soothing anodyne.

I am skeptical of its full value to other groups e. Perhaps future editions will remedy the aforementioned shortcomings, as undoubtedly will empirical data sets that come to hand. Welcome to my website, which I have created in order to tell you about myself and describe my models of human performance, as well as emotional and social intelligence, that I have developed.

I describe how these models were created and how they can be used at home, school, work and in healthcare. One of the primary reasons for doing this is that I have come across, from time to time, inaccurate descriptions of me and my work. Additionally, I have received numerous requests for information about these models, what I have worked and on, and what I am currently working on. This website provides current information about the Multifactor Model of Performance , which represents the next big paradigm shift in understanding, assessing and improving performance and in psychology in general.

This goes beyond the paradigm shift ushered in by emotional intelligence; and it will have greater implications for parenting and raising the next generation, education and academic performance, occupational performance and leadership, and healthcare. This website is intended for students, researchers and practitioners who are interested in learning more about and enhancing human behavior, performance and well-being. This website contains information on a wide range of topics including:.
