There are two types of network diagramming, logical and physical. A logical network diagram illustrates the flow of information through a network and shows how devices communicate with each other. It typically includes elements like subnets, network objects and devices, routing protocols and domains, voice gateways, traffic flow and network segments. In logical network diagrams, there are pivots for small, medium and large networks, where network diagram templates can be helpful.


Think of physical network mapping like a floor plan. It shows all of the physical aspects and arrangement of the network, including ports, cables, racks and servers, as well as any other hardware or devices that apply. But which one you use, and when, all depends on your network topology. Topology refers to the arrangement of physical or logical aspects of your network. While there exists a wide range of derivations in topologies, they generally all stem from four basic formats: Bus, Ring, Star and Mesh.


Most ring topologies are unidirectional, meaning that data can only move in one direction. Also, bidirectional two-way data travel networks are possible. The star topology features a central hub or switch that acts as a server, with the peripheral devices acting as clients. All data passes through the hub or switch before going to the connected device.


Generally used for wireless networks, mesh topology connects computers and network devices. In full mesh topology, all nodes are connected, while with a partial mesh topology, at least two nodes in the network are connected to multiple other nodes in that network. In addition to the four main topologies, there are also hybrid topologies that combine at least two topologies to form something new.


Hybridization makes it possible to gain the strengths of the topologies and reduce the disadvantages of each. However, you can also combine star and ring topologies, star and bus topologies, and use other combinations to get the performance you need. The possibilities are virtually endless. Change how the nodes are displayed Note: By default, the network diagram shows critical tasks in red and displays one diagonal line through a task that is in progress and crossed diagonal lines through a completed task. On the Format tab, click Box Styles.


In the Style settings for list, click the task category whose content and appearance you want to change. Choose a different Data template - which changes what data is displayed on the node: Under Border, choose the shape, colour, width, and gridline options to create the look you want.


Under Background, choose the required colour and pattern. Click OK. Adjust the diagram layout Depending on the structure of your project, the number of summary tasks and subtasks and the number and types of task links, the Network Diagram boxes may not be arranged as you expected. You can modify the layout by applying different box arrangements, adjusting various layout parameters, and applying one of two different link styles: On the Format tab, click Layout.


Under Box Layout, in the Arrangement list, click how you want the boxes to be arranged. For rows and columns, specify alignment, spacing, height, and width in the corresponding boxes. To space boxes evenly, click Fixed in the Height and Width boxes. Boxes or nodes represent tasks, and dependencies show up as lines that connect those boxes. Add a legend. Automatically change the way the boxes are laid out. Manually change the way boxes are laid out. Change the line style between boxes. Choose what kind of task information to show.


On the Legend tab, decide how you want your legend to look, which pages it should show up on, and then labels you want. Under Box Layout , choose the box arrangement, alignment, spacing, height, and width that work best for you. To space boxes evenly, select Fixed in the Height and Width boxes. Keep in mind that grouped tasks are positioned automatically. If you manually reposition a task, you can change the layout of any linked tasks or subtasks associated with it by right-clicking on the task and choosing Layout Related Tasks Now.


Under Link style , select Rectilinear or Straight. Rectilinear links look like this , and straight links look like this. Select Show arrows to add arrows that point to predecessor and successor tasks.
