A cover 30 is fixed by hinges 31 to the top edge of the front wall member This cover can be pivoted between a vertical or open position and a horizontal or closed position and will remain in either position because the hinges 31 are spring loaded. A handle 32 is fixed to the extending edge to allow ease of lifting. A front flange 54 extends normal to the cover and overlaps the outer side wall members 27 of the tool boxes when the boxes are in the stored position shown in FIG.
Locks 35 in the center rear wall member 36 serve as means to hold the cover in the horizontal or closed position to prevent raising of the cover. When in this position, the tool boxes cannot be swung outward and access to the tool areas is prohibited. A top wall 37 on each of the tool boxes covers that portion not closed by the cover The center vertical wall member 36 extends between the tool boxes and is fixed rigidly to the extending edge of the bottom wall member 21 to close the tool storage area between the tool boxes.
This center wall member serves to support bumper guards 40 and a license plate A light 42 is mounted on the center wall member and a hitch receiver 44 is provided for receiving a trailer hitch of standard design.
By incorporting the hitch receiver within a center tool compartment 46, the pin locking mechanism not shown holding the hitch in the receiver is inaccessible when the cover is locked thereby safeguarding the hitch against theft.
Additionally a connector 45 is provided for electrical connection to a trailer if desired. Thus there is provided a bumper which with the tool boxes in their stored position appears very similar to other bumpers.
The tool boxes are each supported by a pin 23 fixed to the bumper and extending into a well 33 within the box. With the cover 30 raised, each tool box can be swung to the outer position about the pin 23 to allow easy access to the tool compartments contained therein even when the tailgate is lowered. Many pickup trucks are designed to include a standard longitudinally extending pull bar that is mounted to the frame of the truck and that extends rearwardly of the truck and at a level usually lower than the level of the bed of the truck so that a trailer hitch can be connected to the pull bar and trailers may be connected to the trailer hitch and trail behind the truck.
This provides a means for connecting boat trailers and various other wheel mounted towed trailers and other items to be pulled behind the truck. This invention concerns a tool box that may be securely but releasably mountable to a typical tool bar of a typical pickup truck, behind the bed of the truck and at a height usually below the tailgate of the truck when the tailgate is tilted away from the bed of the pickup truck.
Referring in more detail to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, FIGS. The container 11 box includes a front wall 16 that is to face the pickup truck, a rear wall 18 that is parallel to and spaced from the front wall 16 , and side walls 20 and 21 that connect the rear wall 18 to the front wall 16 , with beveled corners 22 and 23 at the junctions between the side walls and the rear wall The container lid 13 includes a perimeter rim 26 that is shaped to telescope about the upper edges of the rear wall, beveled corners, and side walls when tilted downwardly about the hinge 15 to its closed position shown in FIG.
When closed as shown in FIG. A damper 28 shown in FIG. The container box also includes a bottom wall 24 which has horizontal extensions 30 and 31 that extend rearwardly beyond the rear wall An apron 32 is mounted to the rear wall 18 and to the horizontal extensions 30 and This forms a rearwardly facing license plate recess 33 of the size and shape of a typical automobile license plate, for receiving a license plate as shown in FIG.
