Oh there are plenty issues with Linux, believe me! Having tried numerous times over the years to install it on ex Windows laptops, Linux always makes those laptops run on high CPU and high fan speeds due to its lack of proper control over these. Unlike Windows, Linux is often a pain on laptops for this reason. Look it up. Which makes sense, I havec made the appropriate settings with my Samba server to make it the master.

And, no, it isn't just me, it's everyone on my network. After changing all of the settings as recommended and rebooting, I was able to see all of the computers from all of the other computers. But the laptop keeps randomly disappearing from the other two, and the other two keep losing visibility of the laptop.

Today, all of them were visible and I could share files fine. Then I closed my laptop, sleep mode. I restarted the laptop, and then I could see the Win 7 PC again.

I have been dealing with this problem for years. My home office Windows network sharing has always been intermittently reliable with some devices showing up and others not showing. I almost never know what changed between times working and not working times. From my perspective, MS shared networking is pretty much a black box. This time, I was really stuck with absolutely no luck for a few weeks.

By chance, I was looking at my 3 month old Comcast XB7 wireless router. I was surprised to see that even though all of my wireless devices were working perfectly, the Comcast router said they were all offline. After spending an hour with Comcast tech support, we completely reset my router and WiFi connection.

Immediately, all my active devices showed up as online on the router and MS Internet Explorer showed all of my active devices with sharing working. This appears to be because the protocol it relies on, SMB1 is disable by defautlf for security reasons. Thank you for this, it solved net view which was giving an error too. Thanks the best! I had endless Network problems after building a new computer and upgrading others. Some could see others but not my new one with an image of my previous Win 10 sys. I finally picked one of my systems running Windows 7 x64 that had never had a problem previously, and disabled Discovery and file sharing. After a cold restart I re-enabled both, and instantly had the full network visible across all computers..!

I suggest: Disable IPv6. Enable network discovery. Use static IPs on all workstations. Duplicate IPs will prevent you from accessing it.

I ended up creating a new workgroup and adding each pc to it, thus restarting each one. This was the first indication of success I had - before this, the new pc did not 'see' the workgroup, and the workgroup did not see the new pc.

As I restarted the workgroup members, they became visible to the new pc, and they to it. It might be enough to add the new Win 7 to the workgroup and restart each member of the workgroup.

Sunday, March 13, AM. Goto to control panel on Win 7. Go to system and security. Goto system. Scroll down to "computer name, domain and workgroup setting".

Click the "Change" box. Next, click on "workgroup" at the bottom. In the box just type "HOME". Now do the same with yr XP machines.

Just go to Control panel, systems, change the workgroup name. Type in "HOME" for all of them for now. See if that works. For some strange reason some win 7 updates just screws it all up. I had the same probs guys.

Careful of yr anti virus firewalls too. I did everything concievable no fix. But after I did this. Try this first before chacking other technical stuff that might make matters worse, especially if it was working previously.

Tuesday, April 26, PM. I read all the posts in this thread, but no luck. My problem is little bit different. I have 2 win 7 pcs. They have the exact same sharing setting.

Network discovery is on. File and printer sharing is on. Public folder sharing is on. Password protected sharing is on. I created another user called access on both computers, and the user has the permission to access the folder. If I turn off Password protected sharing, I have no problem.

However, if I turn on Password protected sharing, the computer can't access each other. You might not have permission to use this network resource.

Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.

I had similar problems, i had already done all the suggested fixes, so i was looking at my router setup webpage and deleted 2 items in my DHCP reservations list that i had setup months ago which were no longer being used but 1 was the same name as my computer, rebooted the router and now my desktop and laptop see each other and networking works fine.

The issue started when I reported slow transfer rates top our support personnel when copying data from one computer to another. We tried swapping Ethernet cables and I believe switched to the other 2nd port on the back of the PC.

We then lost everything and had all the problems listed in this thread which we read from one end to the other, along with a heap of other threads elsewhere. We eventually found a tip that resolved our issue which I thought I would share in this one. Somehow the adapter settings had lost the "Client for Microsoft Networks". We re-established that one simple thing and of course everything went back to normal. How we lost this is beyond our understanding.

Well after trying every suggestion I found I gave up and figured my last step would be wiping the drive and starting with a clean install.

So I was waiting until I had time to do it. Then one day I noticed it was seeing all the computers and NAS boxes again. I don't know what happened other than a month or more passed and maybe an update fixed it. It's been work fine ever since. It seems to have fixed itself. I had another Win7 computer do the same thing but in a shorter time.

Set all Computers to their own Unique IPs in the network, so each computer can finding each other easier rather than rely on "automtic search" on the network. I find this approach much better. I have 30 pcs all running on several platforms and they works fine.

I had a similar problem. My client's windows 7 laptop could not see Vista computer or attached printer. Search for printer or PC was not found. Fix was completely unexpected. It also resolved weird print error messages about print driver needs installed every time I booted print server Vista PC.

Even though it successfully installed each time PC started. There are many issues with Windows 7 networking.
