In most cases, students will only need to submit select additional materials — you will not be asked to reapply. You may write a second-choice program on your application, but SIT Study Abroad will contact you before changing your program affiliation; second choices will not automatically be considered. Once you have been accepted, there are additional steps before you will be able to enroll in the program such as submitting confirmation materials and payment.


Health review and, visa processes also apply for the majority of programs. For most programs, by the time an offer of admission is extended, you will have received pre-departure materials specific to your program, including health and safety advisories, country and cultural information, and packing guidelines.


Students who have been denied admission to SIT Study Abroad may appeal the decision by sending a letter to the director of admissions within 10 days of notification. Download the Appeals Policy. If a student has already selected a program, they will have been advised to do their research on courses available at the foreign institution, to the extent that is possible, so they can provide the faculty advisor with as much information as there is available.


Frequently in this scenario the student is seeking course approval from abroad for reasons outside their control, such as when they are studying in a country where pre-departure approval is more challenging, when there are unforeseeable timetable changes at the host institution, or when they are studying at institutions where course information is harder to obtain prior to arrival. Procedurally, students should plan to send the faculty advisor an email containing all the relevant course information.


Students who were unable to get their courses approved prior to or during their study abroad program or had courses conditionally approved will be required to get their courses approved after they return. Please note: Faculty advisors can only approve credit for courses that would be offered within their own department on campus. German language courses should be approved by the German department advisor, even if the student is not majoring or minoring in German.


Interdisciplinary coursework, such as area studies or cultural studies, can often times be approved by more than one department, especially when a course could be cross-listed when offered on campus History of China could be approved by East Asian Languages and Cultures AND History, for example.


In these cases, it is generally decided by the student in consultation with their advisor which department to approach for credit approval. No signed pre-approval form is considered to be binding.


No course taken outside Cornell may be approved for credit toward the senior seminar requirements for majors. As much information as possible: titles, course descriptions, syllabi if available--all in English. Exception: the Sotheby's program in London.


Because it is exclusively art historical-- that is, students cannot take courses in other disciplines-- the full 15 credits can be counted toward the major. Students should look for the equivalent or a comparable course at Cornell first and include this information when submitting materials for pre- approval. Course titles, descriptions, syllabi, reading lists, credits, prerequisites--the more, the better. All in English. As much information about proposed courses as possible, so that they can be discussed in the context of requirements for the major.


No set policy. What's important is whether the work abroad corresponds to the major requirements. One frequent issue with non-English-speaking institutions is that students do little writing. This can affect how much credit the student will be awarded by the department.


Meeting not required but majors should discuss their plans with their major advisors. Students may request permission from the DUS to send syllabi from abroad. Final decisions cannot be made without syllabi. Faculty advisor approves coursework taken outside of Cornell's Psychology Department. But typically no more than 3 courses outside of Cornell's Psychology Department can be applied toward the major. This includes courses taken abroad, courses taken at Cornell in related departments, and courses taken at other institutions.


For preapproval of courses, a course title and brief description will be fine, along with number of credits, name of the instructor, etc. A syllabus or bibliography might not be available in advance. The program encourages students to have an international experience during their time at Cornell. Syllabi required to course approval; students may email syllabi from abroad to the DUS if they are unable to obtain them before they depart.


At minimum, course titles and descriptions are required for pre-approval. Students may email a syllabus to the DUS from abroad to confirm the course will count toward the major. A syllabus is required for final approval of credit toward the major upon return. A preliminary assessment can be given based on course title and description. Course titles and descriptions typically suffice, as the faculty are generally familiar with the programs and courses that the students are attending for credit towards the statistical science major.
