This connection is an important safety feature: it keeps the QS6.

Unfortunately, not all three-hole sockets are properly grounded. We recommend that you use an AC line tester to check the ground connection on any socket you may use, just to be on the safe side. If you find an ungrounded outlet, consult with a licensed electrician about getting the problem fixed. Avoid using ungrounded outlets. Plugging the QS6. Alesis cannot be responsible for any problems that might be caused by using the QS6. The power coming through some AC lines contains voltage surges, spikes, or transients that can stress your gear, causing failure or malfunctions.

Although the QS6. So if the power in your area is particularly bad or if you are out playing live gigs you will probably want to take precautions. You have three basic options:. These relatively inexpensive devices are designed to protect against strong surges and spikes.

This is the most expensive way to go, but it is also the best. This will prevent anything in RAM-only memory from getting lost, and enable you to take the time to shut down everything properly. That last step is very important. The QS6. These make for several possible hookups:. To run in mono, connect a single mono cable from one of the QS6.

Please note that with this connection you will only be hearing one channel, so any Programs or Mixes designed for stereo output will sound incomplete or diminished. For full effect, make sure that these inputs are panned hard left and right.

To listen over headphones, plug a set of high-quality stereo headphones into the headphones [ ] jack on the rear panel. Some headphones have a higher electrical resistance than others; if the sound level seems too low even with the [VOLUME] slide up full, try a different set. To get the highest audio quality when performing or recording, set your QS6. The audio connections between your QS6. These should be low-capacitance shielded cables, with a stranded internal conductor and a low-resistance shield.

Avoid cables with solid internal conductors. Quality cables cost more, but they are worth it. If you want to the lowest possible noise and the best possible sound, there is no other way to go. As for what to do with them when setting up, here are some basic mistakes to avoid:. If you do, the audio cables will pick up hum from the AC line.

Stepping on a cable will compress the insulation between the center conductor and shield, and over time this will degrade performance and reliability. The best way to unplug a cable is to firmly grasp the body of the plug and then pull it straight outward. When connecting audio cables, or turning power on and off, make sure that ALL devices in your system are turned off and ALL volume controls are turned down.

This is important. MIDI is the standard data communication protocol for electronic musical instruments. This port is for receiving MIDI information notes, program changes, etc. To play your QS6. This will take two MIDI cables. If you overshoot, just press the [PAGE ] button to get back. There are three options:. Use this setting if your computer is a PC and its serial port runs at Use this setting if your computer is a Macintosh.

Likewise, if the switch is set to [PC], then the Mac setting will not show up in the display. If you want to link your QS6. Complete installation instructions come with the driver software. The procedure will vary depending on your version of Windows. The special cable can be purchased through Alesis Product Support. Be aware that many PCs have more than one serial port, and some have both types of connector.

Before you order a cable from us you will need to A identify the port you wish to hook up to, and B make certain it is not already in use by the computer. Any standard Mac DIN-8 cable will do. If both ports are already in use, you can either A temporarily disconnect your modem or printer, or B buy a multiple serial port box that will let you hook everything up to your Mac and switch among these serial devices as needed. There are lots of interesting possibilities to explore.

A starter example: using a footswitch to turn vibrato on in a program, and using a volume-type pedal to control vibrato speed. If your sustain footswitch responds backwards i. Move this control up or down to expressively bend the pitch of the synth. Move this control to cause interesting sonic changes in the current Program or Mix. This fader raises and lowers the QS6. These faders are programmable and can be used to give you hands-on control of many different parameters.

What they do will vary depending on how the Program or Mix has been designed. As you move them, the LCD gives you visual feedback in the form of small vertical bar-graphs. Please note: this only happens if a control function is assigned to the slider being moved.

That means the quickest way to find out which sliders are working in a given Program is to push all four sliders up while watching the display.

When you are editing, this button increments the selected value. This button takes you into Edit Mode. A true multi-purpose control. In normal performance it gives you a quick way to copy the current Program or Mix to a new location. In Program Mode, this button changes your QS6. In Mix Mode, it is used to display the Programs assigned to different MIDI channels, so that you can change these assignments on the fly. In addition, the parameters in most other functions will differ.

Page Program Edit Functions Mode. Drum Mode allows you to assign individual drum sounds to individual keys. Page 57 WavLoop4. Page Level Aux output. This section lets you feed the sound to one of the effect buses for processing see Chapter 7 for more information on editing Effects. Page Pitch Pitch Envelope parameters such as attack and decay time are programmed within the Pitch Envelope Function see page Page 60 Use 1-PITCH mode when you want a program sound layer to play a single pitch polyphonically throughout the entire keyboard range.

Page Filter TIP: Many acoustic instruments, such as acoustic guitars, sound brighter when you play them more forcefully. Adding a little positive velocity control over the filter can simulate more realistic acoustic sounds.

Page 62 negative or positive , the greater the effect. Filter Envelope parameters such as attack and decay time are programmed within the Filter Envelope Function see page Page 65 64 voices in no time. By adjusting the Sound Overlap to a lower value, you decrease the number of voices used by each new note, and thereby ensure there are voices available to play other sounds, if necessary. Page 6 QS6 Reference Manual Page 67 However, this does not effect the attack time, but only the decay, sustain decay and release segments.

This feature will result in only a subtle change. Page Filter Envelope Release time to 0 is good for playing those short funky riffs that you hear on a clavinet. Setting the Release time to 99 will take the envelope a very long time to reach zero level. Page 70 This determines whether or not the Sustain Pedal will have an effect on the envelope.

When turned on, holding down the Sustain Pedal while playing short notes is virtually the equivalent to holding down those notes on the keyboard with some subtle but QS6 Reference Manual Editing Programs: Chapter 6 Page Although the QS6 keyboard does not generate poly pressure, the sound generators can respond to poly pressure signals entering via the MIDI In.

Page Filter Lfo Mod Wheel will add more tremolo. On the other hand, if the Mod Wheel parameter is set to , raising the Mod Wheel to the top will cancel out all tremolo. A description of these settings is found in the Trigger section of the Pitch LFO description on page Page Amp Envelope Mute Group. The additional Mute Groups can be used by other sounds that you wish to cut-off each other, but do not want to interfere with the Hi Hat sounds.

Page Copying Sounds Program. If you select to copy sound 2 to Program 45, the sound will be copied into sound 2 of Program Page Initializing Programs While holding down both Buttons [0] and [3], turn on the power. This is the Program Mode edit buffer, set to the default settings.

The QS6 effects processor has four inputs, called effect sends. You might think of these as the typical post-fader sends found on a mixing console. For more about copying effects, see page Page 94 Delay 1 and Reverb 1. Page 96 Reverb effect. Sends 2 and 3 have Pitch modules preceding Delay modules, which are then routed to Reverb 1.

Send 4 has only a Mono Delay effect, which may also be routed to Reverb 1. The outputs of all these effects are routed back to the Outputs, and sent through the shelving EQ effect. Page Mod The Mod Function lets you control various effects parameters from the various controls on the QS6 keyboard, after-touch, pitch-bender, etc. This is extremely useful when dynamic or real-time control is required in a live playing situation.

Page Example: If the Reverb Decay was selected as the Destination with the mod wheel as the Source, the mod wheel could be programmed to cause the Reverb to increase the decay positive or decrease the decay negative. Clean only with a damp cloth. Do not spray any liquid cleaner onto the faceplate, as this may damage the front panel controls or cause a dangerous condition.

Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus including amplifiers that produce heat.

Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. When the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

Plug the male plug end into a properly grounded power outlet. The QS will automatically route both left and right channels to that output. Plugging the QS into an ungrounded outlet can be hazardous.

WARNING: When connecting audio cables or turning power on and off, make sure that the amplifiers in your system are turned off or the volume controls are turned down. NOTE: If your sustain pedal responds backwards i. Then, turn the QS back on while keeping your foot off the footswitch. The QS has five built-in demo sequences.

To play a demo, hold down [MIX] and press a number button from [0] through [4]. Playback will start with the specified demo and continue through the remaining demos. The sounds in your QS are called Programs. Programs contain all of the parameters that are needed to define a sound. The display should look something like this:. More Banks are available if you have an expansion card. To call up an individual Program, press the numbered buttons for the Program you want to recall.

A Mix is a combination of up to 16 Programs, allowing you to play more than one sound at the same time. The Programs may be split or layered across the keyboard, or distributed among MIDI channels for multitimbral sequencing.

The numbers at the bottom of the display show which Mix Channels are enabled in this Mix. Each Mix Channel contains a Program. The selected Mix Channel will blink at the bottom of the screen and the name of the Program on that channel will be displayed.

Now suppose you want to choose a different bass Program for the lower half. To do this, you need to change the Program in that Mix Channel. The selected Mix Channel should be flashing at the bottom of the display. A Bank is a collection of Programs and Mixes. Depending on how hard you play, the volume and tonal quality of the sound will change.

While holding key down, you can press harder on it to change the character of the sound. In most of the presets, slider [A] controls a filter or filtersweep effect, [B] a delay effect, [C] an envelope time, and [D] a reverb effect. As you move the sliders, the LCD gives you visual feedback in the form of small vertical bar graphs.

For example, if you want to shift up a semitone, tap the C-sharp key. The other Banks are permanent. TIP: Using this method, you can transpose up or down by as much as one octave.

To transpose by a greater interval, use the Global transpose page. The display will look something like this:. Hold this button and touch a key. In this mode, you can play up to 16 Programs at the same time. You can use this mode to create keyboard splits or keyboard layers, or for multitimbral sequencing. Many people are perfectly happy using their QS without ever editing a sound. In this mode, you can change the settings that make up a Program or create an entirely new Program from scratch.

In this mode, you can change the settings that make up a Mix or create an entirely new Mix from scratch. You can always tell what page you are on by looking at the indicator in the upper right corner of the display.
