The mission of the Indiana University Genetic Counseling Graduate Program is to provide a comprehensive program of genetic counseling instruction for our students with a focus on clinical experience and counseling skills in an environment that values and supports equity and inclusion. Through rigorous coursework, field experience and research, along with the unwavering faculty and supervisor support of our students, the program trains highly competent genetic counselors who are well-prepared to serve in both clinical and nonclinical roles in the genetics community and to lead future generations of genetic counselors.

The program values compassion, honesty, dedication and personal integrity, and encourages professional collaboration, pursuit of excellence and commitment to ongoing professional development. The Genetic Counseling Graduate Program curriculum begins with a fall semester of didactic courses and clinical observations that focus on the basics of human genetics and enable students to begin practical application of skills in clinical case research and preparation, medical documentation, and patient counseling in the clinical setting.

Clinical rotations begin in the spring semester of the first year and continue throughout the summer semester and entire second academic year. Successful completion of the Genetic Counseling graduate program at IU School of Medicine leads to a Master of Science degree in medical and molecular genetics. Students in this program are supervised by supportive, experienced, licensed certified genetic counselors and board-certified medical geneticists.

The curriculum offers deep clinical experience, which requires active participation in all aspects of the case preparation, counseling and follow-up as well as experience across numerous specialty areas, including pediatrics, cancer, prenatal diagnosis, metabolism, cardiovascular genetics, neurogenetics, and more.
