Linksys media center extender wmce54ag vista
I just want to make sure. I have asked 3 times now. Twice I was told "yes" but when I asked again recently I was told emphatically "no" it would not be supported and I would have to get a new media center extender.
Nurodin : I understand that part, Steve. Nurodin : You're welcome. Would there be anything else? Nurodin : Okay. Again, this has been Nurodin ID Feel free to contact us if you require further assistance. And please don't forget to log-out. Have a great day and take care! Did you hear back from Linksys on the new firmware with support for Vista? I am holding on my vista upgrade for the same reason as you.
Yes, I finally heard back definitively from Linksys. Seems that their tech support people gave conflicting information initially. If you upgrade to Vista, you must either buy an Xbox , or wait for one of the newer media center extenders to come out.
I'm not happy about it, and I'm sure none of the other people that bought MCE extenders are happy either. As of this writing, I don't think there are any other choices for a Vista-capable extender besides the Xbox I'm going to wait until something comes out that doesn't have a noisy fan in it Having same issue here - just bought one believing Linksys would support the product.
Perhaps there's a need for a 'community' lobby to Linksys. Do you guys have a clean install of Vista? I had problems with all my tuners after I upgraded from MCE Then I performed a clean install and all the tuners were recognized immediately.
I think you are confusing the media center capability of Vista ability to recognize TV tuners, abilty to record TV shows, etc. The problems we are all having relate to finding something other than the Xbox that can allow our media center computer to live in one room, and our TV screen to live in another room. So if I can do that, it might be possible to swap the mini-pci card on the extender.
The AirLink had a Ralink I can find some drivers for it online. It's a RTT chip. The But If I can hack into extender, then it could be possible to install a different mini-pci card with better bandwidth capabilities.
Maybe even a nice Broadcom mini-pci card. Doramius wrote:. Still need someone who might have knowledge or ability to hack the ATI Xilleon chip. Posted: Thu Nov 19, Post subject:. I was initially thinking that as well, but I think it controls the the analog ports rather than process and streaming data. Usually you have to use a different Media Center software for Linux extenders to work. Of course, I don't have a way to find out for sure.
I'm not sure how I would be able to connect to the device, just yet, to find out how to make the change. Posted: Sun Dec 20, Post subject:. Just an update. However, I did find a way to use it with my Win I have Win7 bit, and my extender will not connect to it directly. However, my system supports virtualization.
I have the network connection bridged, and I only need to run it when I'm using the extenders. So while I haven't hacked the unit but would still like to the need is not as pressing since it works great without hacking. There are some features that are not available that I want to unlock, such as the USB port and the ability to read other video formats without having to encode on-the-fly with a 3rd party program taking up precious CPU power.

Although I still use it with MCE I do have a laptop already running Win7 Ultimate so it wouldn't be difficult to plug it into that and try things. This would require someone with some extensive programming background, especially in WinCE.
I don't know if we'll be lucky enough to get that. I do recommend running MCE in a virtual mode if your system supports it. SO far I have had absolutely no issues with it. I would still like to play with the firmware on my extender, but as time passes the likelihood of that happening becomes less. Power on - unit tells you that it is disconnected and asks if you want to setup a connection 4.
Select "Next" 5. Select your connection type I chose "Wired" - unit tells you cable is disconnected 6. Plug in network cable - unit immediately goes to settings selection 7. Select "Manually" 8. Enter your gateway address, e. Enter a bogus DNS address, e. Select "Finish" I think. Labels: htpc , media center , Microsoft.
