Red Hills Horse Trials sees clear, chilly day at Saturday cross-country event. Facebook Twitter Email. She said even though the weekend is an international equestrian competition, an activity which occupies a very specific niche, it draws people out to one of Tallahassee's special outdoor spots. A big draw for riders and spectators is the cross-country course.

Tallahassee, already famous for its trees, challenges horses with shadows and the park's natural landscape. Not all horses have seen Spanish moss. The three-day equestrian event includes a dressage ballet, wooded gallop and arena jumping. Dressage on Friday is best compared to horse ballet and is designed to test a horse's agility with former cavalry exercises. Just as human ballet dancers train rigorously for arabesques, allegros and assembles, so too do horse and rider practice their half-passes, pirouettes and transverse.

Look for the final halt horse and salute rider — all four of the horse's legs should be square.
