Many programs are hacked by the cygwin team, so trying to install them from their distributions doesn't work. If a programme is hacked, can I still install it? You're welcome to build packages from source, but you'll probably end up doing a lot of work which has already been done by Cygwin contributurs. So you're probably better off using the Cygwin-distributed packages from the Cygwin website which have already been "tweaked" or "hacked" to make them work.
