Replaced it with one from Silex America, so far so good, and even easier than the first. You do need to install the software on the machine but that's not an issue for me.


We went with a 2 device adapter so there are two USB dongles being used by two separate servers. Neither software company explicitly supports this but both are working, one is a CAD package and the other a phone software. These older Paralle dongles normally load drivers and other software into XP to allow them to work. Normally I have had to downgrade the boxes to XP or install that software onto a seperate box and then allow access via RDP or smlar.


Can't promise it will work, but you could try an IP to parallel converter, designed for IP enabling printers. This solution would also prevent the need to license another instance of Windows XP either in a virtual environment or on another system.


Windows Virtual PC can emulate some hardware devices, but cannot access the physical hardware devices on the computer directly. When I open up an XP mode window I can execute the program without problem, I can open up the shared drive no problem, I can map the drive no problem. However, when I add the program to all users and create a link on the Windows 7 host machine the program no longer works correctly. Which doesn't make sense to me because the program itself is actually running within the virtual machine much like if it were running on a remote computer that can be seen from the host machine like using RDP.


So when I asked the question I wanted to clarify that it should not matter that I am unable to access the share from the host machine, because the host machine is doing nothing more than operate the window to the virtual machine.


The program I am using processes credit cards and when a card is swiped the program writes the data to that shared drive. When I swipe a card I get a "Run-time error '76' Path not found" which according to the software's documentation indicates that the program is not able to access that shared drive.
