There was something to do with the fact that they used a picture of themselves as a texture on the 3d model and the authorities were able to unravel it and figure out their identities, or that sega was able to tell what development kit utopia had used to create the bootdisc, and from Sega's records, find out who had been given that devkit and to whom representing utopia, it had been shared with.
