Internal Side-Chain Techniques To try some of these techniques, place the Dyn3 Compressor on the insert slot of the track or channel you wish to compress in either the Mix or Edit window.

Frequency Conscious Compression The idea behind this is that by adjusting the frequencies present in the side-chain signal we can make the compressor ignore or react less to certain elements of the signal.

This allows you to hear the signal in the side-chain circuit instead of the main signal. Turn the Frequency Select knob in the Low Filter section to the right to remove the low frequencies from the side-chain signal compare your results by disabling and enabling the low filter section.

Deactivate the listen button to return to listening to the main signal. Set the compressor controls as desired. Place the compressor on an insert on the vocal track you wish to de-ess, play the song. Enable the EQ section of the side-chain and adjust the controls to highlight the sibilant frequencies. Note the use of the bandwidth filter rather than slope in the EQ shown above , which can be more affective. Solo Frequency Bandwidth Mode External Side-Chain Techniques As demonstrated by the previous de-essing technique used by Bob Clearmountain, the ability to modify or replace the side-chain signal offers greater control, flexibility and creative possibilities.

Setting Up the External Routing Place a compressor on an insert of the track that you wish to apply the compression to. Decide which track you want to use to drive the side-chain this could be a duplicate of the track used in step 1 or an entirely different signal.
